Rice Gets Win in 1st Garden State Rivalry Game

NEWARK, N.J. – Seton Hall passed on Mike Rice last spring, allowing Rutgers to name him their new coach more than a month later.

In his first game against Seton Hall, Rice scored a measure of revenge when the Scarlet Knights beat the Pirates, 66-60, before 8,929 at The Prudential Center.

It was the first victory for Rutgers (12-7, 3-4 Big East) in the Garden State rivalry since March 9, 2008. Seton Hall (8-12, 2-6) had won four straight and seven of 10 in the series.

“I’m just happy when it came my turn in line, that Mike was available,” Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said before the game.
