The Big East Conference named Pittsburgh forward Gilbert Brown and Seton Hall forward Fuquan Edwin the winners of the conference’s weekly men’s basketball honors for the week ending Dec. 19.

Brown was named Big East Player of the Week. In Pittsburgh’s only game of the week, Brown scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field in a 97-64 win over Md.-Eastern Shore.  The senior from Harrisburg, Pa., was 4-of-5 from 3-point range, grabbed five rebounds and dealt five assists in 24 minutes of action.  For the season, Brown is averaging 10.9 points and 4.7 rebounds.

Duke signee Austin Rivers dropped 42 points and Winter Park (10-1) beat previously undefeated Palm Beach Gardens, 76-64, in the City of Palms Classic Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Rivers now has 70 points in two games at the event.

“He just continues to amaze me and everybody else in the stands,” Wildcats coach David Bailey told the Orlando Sentinel.

Winter Park faces Alpharetta, Ga., Milton (9-1) in one semifinal Tuesday at 7 at Bishop Verot High School.

Can Rick Pitino become the Coach K of Puerto Rico?

Pitino is following in Coach K’s footsteps on the international stage after announcing Monday that he will coach the Puerto Rico national basketball team in preparation for a 2011 pre-Olympic qualifying tournament.

Pitino will coach the national team in the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship basketball tournament to be played in Mar del Plata, Argentina on Aug. 25-Sept. 8, 2011, at the 8,000-seat Polideportivo Islas Malvinas. Puerto Rico must finish among the top two teams to advance to the 2012 Olympics in London.

When Mike Krzyzewski tied Adolph Rupp for third place on the all-time Division 1 victory list earlier this month, he joked, “I’m gonna win more games, I think. Coach Rupp, God bless him, is not.”

The same can be said of Dean Smith and Bob Knight, both of whom are retired while Coach K is fast moving up the list.

With No. 1 Duke’s 98-72 victory Monday over Elon behind 24 points from Kyle Singler, Krzyzewski earned his 879th career victory and tied Smith, the former North Carolina coach, for second all-time.

“It’s an honor to have won that many games,” Krzyzewski said. “I’m sure Dean would say the same thing, that it was an honor for him to win that many games. I have the utmost respect for Dean – the fact that we’ve been really good coaches in this league … he was at his school a long time and I’ve been here a long time.
