MayoHUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — The father of Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo was charged with attempted murder Thursday after he hit a police officer with his car and dragged him for several feet, police said.

Two officers were searching for someone else at about 3:30 a.m. when they saw 39-year-old Kenneth Maurice Ziegler of Huntington in a vehicle trying to hide, police said. When they confronted him, he put the vehicle into gear, drove into one of the officers and dragged him, they said.

Police chased the vehicle for several miles through a Huntington neighborhood before disabling it with spike strips. Ziegler was captured after a short foot chase and charged with attempted murder, two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, obstructing, fleeing in a vehicle and fleeing on foot, police said.

Jarrel Lane hadn’t taken a shot all game.

But the first shot the St. Patrick senior guard attempted in the City of Palms championship turned out to be the game winner.

The 6-foot senior hit a 3-pointer from the right wing on a broken play in the final seconds to give the Celtics a 69-67 victory over Milton (Ga.) as St. Patrick won its first City of Palms crown in six finals appearances at the Fort Myers, Fla tournament.

St. Patrick, winner of five New Jersey Tournament of Champions titles since 1998, had previously lost in the City of Palms final in 1994, 1996, 1997, 2002 and 2008.

“It’s exciting, very exciting,” the 6-foot, 160-pound Lane, a UMBC commit, said by phone. “Not even for the shot, for the team, the program. St. Patrick has been coming here for 10 years. I’m definitely excited about that. My teammates work so hard.”

St. Pat’s is ranked No. 11 by USA Today and Milton is No. 15.

NEW YORK — Reacting to the Larry Brown news in Charlotte, Knicks president Donnie Walsh said Brown left the Knicks in a great spot despite the team’s 23-59 record in his one season as coach.

“When a guy has been in it as long as Larry, I don’t think there’s any sadness in him leaving because he’s left so many teams in great position,” Walsh, making his first appearance at a Knicks game since his Nov. 16 hip-replacement surgery, said before the Knicks hosted Oklahoma City Wednesday at MSG. “He left my team in a great position. He’s helped so many franchises that his legacy is taken care of.”

Brown, whose tenure with the Knicks during the 2005-6 season was marred by public feuds with his own players, including point guard Stephon Marbury, stepped down Wednesday as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. He was replaced on an interim basis by Paul Silas.

DeAndre Daniels has shifted his visit to Texas to after Christmas from before the holiday.

“They never went to Texas,” IMG Academy coach Andy Borman said by phone. “That doesn’t mean they’re not going. They rescheduled the visit for after Christmas. It just works better for their schedules.”

Borman wasn’t certain of the exact dates but said Daniels and his father could visit Texas either Dec. 27-28 or 28-29. Daniels was originally slated to visit Dec. 19-20.

Rules prevent Carmelo Anthony from competing for Puerto Rico in international competition, but that doesn’t mean they won’t try and land him for Olympic qualifying.

“Carmelo is a future plan because right now we don’t do anything to get Carmelo,” Carlos Beltran, president of the Puerto Rican basketballĀ  Federation, said Wednesday in a phone interview.

“That is a decision of Carmelo. But everybody know that he have Puerto Rican roots. Maybe in the near future it’s a possibility.”
