    Haralds Karlis, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from the Canarias Basketball Academy in the Canary Islands, verbally committed to Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard.

    Willard had visited the Academy in the last two weeks to see Karlis, a native of Riga, Latvia. The Academy also produced current Seton Hall freshmen Patrik Auda, a 6-9 wing player, and Aaron Geramipoor, a 6-11 forward.

    “Haralds is a 6-6 two guard who is a phenomenal perimeter shooter,” Canarias coach Rob Orellana said by phone Tuesday morning. “He’s a very, very good athlete. He’s an athlete who gets above the rim.

    Articles, Rutgers, South Kent

    Kadeem Jack, one of seven Rutgers commits for 2011, has left the South Kent (Conn.) school and is back home in New York.

    “Both sides agreed it wasn’t working out,” said a source with direct knowledge.

    The 6-foot-10 Jack, pictured at center, could opt to find another prep school for the remainder of the year or enroll at Rutgers in January.

    He and fellow Rutgers commit Derrick Randall, as well as St. John’s pledge Maurice Harkless, were all at South Kent under head coach Kelvin Jefferson.

    Articles, Duke, Maryland, Oregon State, Princeton, Seton Hall, UCLA, Villanova, Wake Forest

    After taking weekend official visits, New Jersey products Elijah Carter and Desmond Hubert are still weighing their options as they move closer to decisions.

    The 6-foot-2 Carter, a Willingboro, N.J., native, visited Oregon State this past weekend and watched the football team pound Cal, 35-7, on Homecoming Weekend.

    “I had a great time,” Carter said by text. “I really enjoyed the college life out there.”

    GREENBURGH, N.Y. — LeBron, D-Wade and Chris Bosh are hogging most of the NBA media attention down in Miami.

    The Celtics of Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Shaquille O’Neal have gotten their share of love, too.

    But outside of Orlando, you don’t hear much about Dwight Howard and the Magic.

    With Orlando set to come to Madison Square Garden Tuesday night, Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire says it would be a mistake to discount the Magic in the Eastern Conference.

    Duke, Oak Hill Academy, UCLA

    Oak Hill point guard Quinn Cook will announce this week for either Duke or UCLA, according to Oak Hill head coach Steve Smith.

    “He is close to making a commitment and I think he will probably do something middle or the end of the week,” Smith said Monday afternoon by phone.

    He added: “I think he’s got his mind made up and he’s just not saying.”

    The NCAA early signing period runs Nov. 10-17.

    Smith said it would come down to Duke or UCLA and that North Carolina and Villanova were not real options.

    Old Knicks

    GREENBURGH, N.Y. –– The Knicks won’t grant an extension to Wilson Chandler by tonight’s deadline for 2007 draft picks.

    “We’re not going to do it,” Knicks president Donnie Walsh said Monday at practice, confirming an earlier report by the New York Post. “I think the picture will be clearer if we leave it until the summer. It’s not over one thing. It has nothing to do with Wilson. It’s just a matter of having a clearer picture of basically what we’re going to pay him when the time comes.”

    With the collective bargaining agreement set to expire June 30, the Knicks could simply be waiting to get a clearer picture on how the league’s financials will look once summer comes.

    Articles, Georgetown

    Tyler Adams, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound center from Brandon, Miss.. who initially committed to Duke, is now headed to Georgetown.

    “I just felt like it was the best fit for me,” Adams said by text. “And it was the college that could help me get to the next level because of their history with bigs. And I love the coaching staff.”

    “Basically the situation was we felt that Georgetown would be a better fit for him [than Duke],” Lonnie Adams, Tyler’s father, added Monday by phone.

    He added that the family liked “the reputation of the program [and] all of their big men.

    “Also it’s a great school. Obviously, it’s a good program. We like what they do.”

    Adams, the No. 5 center in the Class of 2011, chose the Hoyas over Mississippi State.
