Greg Lewis, the No. 14 center in the Class of 2011 out of Baltimore St. Frances, is down to Rutgers and Maryland.

“I would like him to make a decision  by Monday to get this thing over with,” Greg Lewis Sr. said Thursday by phone.

The 6-foot-8, 225-pound Lewis has cut Indiana, USF and UNC-Wilmington off his list and the father said Georgia and Georgia Tech were also involved.

Rutgers coach Mike Rice has six players committed for 2011 — Myles Mack, Malick Kone, Jerome Seagears, Mike Taylor, Kadeem Jack and Derrick Randall. Among them, only Randall and Jack are big men.

Tyler Harris is down to three schools,

The 6-foot-8 wing from Long Island and Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict’s Prep will not visit St. John’s this weekend as originally scheduled and is now down to N.C. State, Iowa and Providence.

“Tyler’s official visit to St. John’s is cancelled,” Torrel Harris said by text. He will announce Nov. 5.

Harris declined further comment.

St. John’s has five commits for the Class of 2011, including several wings in Maurice Harkless, Dominick Pointer and combo guard D’Angelo Harrison.

Kansas coach Bill Self announced Wednesday that the NCAA has cleared star freshman Josh Selby academically, but that his amateurism status is under review.

“Josh’s status for competition hasn’t changed,” Self said in a statement. “While he has met NCAA academic requirements to be on aid, practice and compete this year, we continue to work with the NCAA as we review his amateur status.  We will not play Josh in games until that process is complete and a decision is rendered.

Having already landed the top New York City player in the Class of 2011 in Maurice Harkless, St. John’s has now gotten a verbal pledge from the best 2012 player in the Big Apple, point guard Jevon Thomas.

Thomas, the No. 14 point guard in the Class of 2012 per Rivals, called Johnnies head coach Steve Lavin Tuesday night to commit.

Asked what he liked about the Johnnies, the 6-foot, 175-pound Thomas said by text, “Coaching staff and I’m just trying to bring NYC basketball back!!”

He also had interest from Washington, Villanova, Syracuse, Wake Forest and West Virginia,

“Jevon will bring back that electric energy and fire back to the Garden and New York,” said Casey Williams, Thomas’ AAU coach.

“He’s a great leader on the court and he’s a New Yorker. He will bring lots of fire and the will to win.”
