When Duke hosts its “Countdown to Craziness” Friday night and unveils the 2010 national championship banner, an impressive group of recruits will be on hand.

Austin Rivers, Duke’s newest 2011 commit, is expected to be on campus, along with Oak Hill point guard Quinn Cook and 2012 prospects Tony Parker of Lithonia, Ga., Amile Jefferson of Philadelphia and Rasheed Sulaimon of Houston.

Quincy Miller, a 6-9 senior forward from Westchester (N.C.) Country Day, will not be there as originally scheduled after the two sides parted ways.

Steve Lavin’s recruiting reach for the Class of 2011 now extends from New York to Ohio to Texas.

Lavin got his third commitment Thursday evening when D’Angelo Harrison, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Dulles (Texas) High, verbally committed on ESPNU.

“I’m going to take it all the way to New York and play for St. John’s,” Harrison said.

The No. 9 shooting guard in the Class of 2011 per Rivals, he chose the Johnnies over Baylor, Oklahoma State and Marquette.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — The Knicks have five years and $100 million invested in Amar’e Stoudemire, and they aren’t about to treat that investment lightly.

So even though Stoudemire poured in 30 points in 27 minutes in Wednesday night’s 104-101 exhibition loss to the Boston Celtics at Madison Square Garden, Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said he would likely sit Stoudemire for the team’s next preseason game, against the Celtics Saturday night in Hartford, Conn.

NEW YORK — After spending three years as the associate head coach at Pittsburgh under Jamie Dixon, Tom Herrion is settling in to life as the head coach at Marshall University in Conference USA.

“I think it’s an exciting opportunity and a great challenge,” Herrion said Wednesday at the conference’s media day in Manhattan.

“There’s a lot of guys in this league that can coach and have won a lot of games,” he added. “So we all consider it a vastly underrated conference and I think we’ve added some terrific coaches. There’s momentum building for this conference and hopefully it’s the ability for all of us to take it to another level.”

Herrion is one of five new coaches in the league, along with Jeff Lebo (East Carolina), James Dickey (Houston), (Marshall), Ed Conroy (Tulane) and Tim Floyd (UTEP). Additionally, Donnie Jones takes over at UCF after three seasons at Marshall.

Dominick Pointer, the No. 21 small forward in the nation, is down to St. John’s and Michigan and could decide during this weekend’s official visit to Michigan.

I spoke with his father, Tony Nolan, and asked him when Pointer might decide.

“Hopefully at Michigan or 48 hours after,” Nolan said. “He goes there tomorrow [Friday] and will be there until Sunday morning

“If he chooses not to go there, I’ll give him 48 hours to make up his mind what he wants to do.”

With its Midnight Madness slated for Friday night at Carnesecca Arena, St. John’s could be in store for a big week on the recruiting front.
