After Nearly Leaving Rutgers, Biruta Could Start

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — During the tumult that engulfed the Rutgers men’s basketball program last spring, Gilvydas Biruta nearly bailed on his commitment to the program.

In the span of a few days in April, the team’s star shooting guard, Mike Rosario, announced he was transferring to Florida, and Fred Hill resigned as coach. Those developments, combined with the earlier departure of 6-9 forward Gregory Echenique, Biruta’s former teammate at St. Benedict’s Prep, put Biruta on the brink of leaving.

“Then I was thinking about it but I decided to stay,” Biruta, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound freshman from Jonava, Lithuania, said Wednesday at Rutgers’ media day.
