Karakas Says Kanter’s Father ‘Negotiated’ Salary

In an article in today’s New York Times, Nedim Karakas, the general manager of the Turkish basketball club Fenerbahce Ulker, says the father of Kentucky freshman star Enes Kanter “negotiated” his salary with the team.

“On the contrary to what he had said about his academic approach, he himself was the one to negotiate the terms of his son’s salary,” Karakas said.

Mehmet Kanter told The Sporting News last week that he “never once” discussed salary with Fenerbahce and kept “meticulous” records to ensure his son retained his amateur status.

Kentucky is still awaiting word on whether the 6-10 Kanter will be eligible to play this season.

Karakas told the Times he has bank statements and other documents proving that Fenerbahce gave Kanter and his family more than $100,000 in salary and expenses, including a $19,800 bonus for making the team and $6,500 monthly.

He declined to make the documents available to the paper, but said he will once the NCAA rules on Kanter’s status.

  • wow….clearly in it with your boy thamel huh?

i mean when the bledsoe decision was announced, nothing was mentioned here. a story thamel went after twice with zero information each time. but when it came out nothing was going to be done about it and his grades where fine, proving thamel’s witch hunt nothing here. nothing here but updates on what loser, no name recruits are going rutgers.

now we have kanter which all you puppets are jumping on. its again thamel’s second piece. 4 total against uk in the past 6 months. again nothing in this of any substance. although this time thamel talks about how stupid kanter is. in addition to a “secret” account which no information was given on. maybe there is something buried in enes hip that shows the account number on a wall in zurich.

and of course when the NCAA comes out with a favorable ruling….and they will…what will thamel look at now? will his witch hunt against uk continue? will his pals in the media continue to link his work in order to generate hits? will we see here on this site that enes is declared eligible showing once again thamel is a fraud? or are you going to stick up for you boy in the media….again?

  • Nobody mentions that he could be making millions of dollars right now, but actually wants to be a student athlete. Clearly the Turkish club has a bone to pick with the Kanter family for messing up their monopoly on basketball talent from Turkey.

  • not only did he turn down millions but did it on separate occasions, with each contract offer being larger then the previous one. think about that for a second. kanter turns down millions a dollars because he wanted to come to the states and play in college….but then decided to take 100K to play in 9 games. yeah ok.

and its nice that the turkish GM is wavering the transfer fee on enes. i wonder if he will do it for all future NBA prospects? lol

  • Boston- I would not say that Bledsoe’s grades were “fine”. The investigation found that there was no credible reason for his grade to be improved.

  • it also found no credible reason to think they werent.

and what the investigation found is irrelevant. the school board decides and the school board said they were fine. so they are fine.

waste of $10000 and illegally published student records. thats pete thamel for ya.

  • stunned to find out this “professional” journalist miss quoted a section from another article. to solve the problem thamel just took that whole section out and probably hopes no one noticed.

keep up the good work pete, keep up the good work.

  • yall are all idiots!!! gotta be ky fans cuz u people are the only ones who actually believe this crap!!! evryone knows bledsoe ruling was foul and there are numerous articles proving this!!! 2nd of all, kanter got paid!!! if this was knight who got paid there would be no argument over this!!! he would not be eligible!!! kanter got paid! he should not be eligible! get over it and stop tryin 2 cheat like ur coach does!!!! sad ur program has come to cheating to win and cant even win championship that way!!!

  • congratulations on a completely illogical and irrational post.

kanter got paid…because you say so. well that settles that. clearly you are in the know and have all the financial records right there in front of you. just like you were also there in birmingham in one of the worst ghettos in the country to know what grades bledsoe got or didnt get.

you just know it all dont you. sounds like a bitter, angry fan whose coach is losing recruits or is under his own investigation. venting against Cal wont change that.

  • they may not be able to prove that kanter was paid, just like they couldn’t prove that bledsoe’s grades were changed. that doesn’t mean that neither happened; that just means that we have a legal system based on the premise of “innocent until proven guilty”.

if you’re good enough at covering your tracks, or can afford the right lawyers, you can literally get away with murder in america. i think, relatively speaking, hiding a paper trail in regards to getting paid to play basketball in turkey, or changing a single grade in an alabama public school, would be pretty simple stuff.

  • If ANY of you really think Cal covered or changed anything and is that good at covering his tracks; YOU are the idiots. Stop hating guys, you are embarrassing yourselves. Worry about your team and we will worry about ours.

    FREE ENES!

  • I have this to SAY…

    The sins of thee Father.

    Enes is DONE.

    Said it months ago.
    CASH MONEY.

The father neg. the son’s contract.

    Believe it.

  • Its simple, kanter was paid. Thus stripping him, of his Amateur Status. Maybe they should just let Brandon Jennings come back and play college ball too.

uk fans have the thick blue shield pulled over their eyes. What gets me is…they also bashed cal when he was at Memphis, now that he is at uk. They are all over his nutt sack and worship the douche. Hypocrites in my oppinion.

Can’t wait for The Maui Invite match up between UW vs. uk. That is taking into account, that uk makes it past Oklahoma first. Going to be a lot of DAWG Barking and throwing up “W” signs. I can just see it. LOL

  • i wish fans of other schools would at least admit they have no idea what they are talking about before submitting their opinion. kanter was paid, simple huh, then what is taking the NCAA so long? why has the turkish GM refused to submit his “evidence” showing he was paid? oh yeah….because he wasnt paid and will be cleared.

i know people are that dumb and are just making these outrageous statements because they get some kind of high out of it, starting arguments.

  • ….and you’ve responded to almost every single post on this article

  • thats because retarded people make me laugh

  • fearthephog has a great idea about letting B. Jennings play in college, well as long as he is still committed to the U of A.
