    Coaches Choice will be hosting a “BEST OF THE BEST COACHES CLINIC” on September 19th at Long Island Lutheran High School, 131 Brookville Road, in Brookville, N.Y.  The clinic will run from 12pm to 5pm and registration is from 11am to 12pm.

    The featured speakers are BRUCE PEARL, Head Coach at the University of Tennessee, who will give a clinic on “Pressure Defense & Special Situations”.  JAY WRIGHT, Head Coach at Villanova, will talk about “Player Development”.  Former Hofstra coach TOM PECORA, now the Head Coach at Fordham, will speak on “Zone Offense & Press Breaks”.  JIM FERRY, Head Coach at L.I.U.  will cover “Practice Drills & Quick Hitters”.

    St. John's, West Virginia

    Phil Greene, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound senior combo guard from Chicago, will visit West Virginia the weekend of Sept. 17 and St. John’s Sept. 24.

    That same weekend, West Virginia will also host Trey McDonald, a 6-9 power forward from Battle Creek (Mich.), and 6-5 small forward Aaron Brown of Landsdowne (Pa.) Penn Wood. Brown has already committed to the Mountaineers for 2011.

    Greene, who attends IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla., previously said DePaul, St. John’s and West Virginia were his top three.

    He is also considering Oklahoma State, UTEP, Oregon, Arizona State, TCU and Marquette.

    Darryl “Mookie” Watkins hasn’t given up on his dream of playing in the NBA.

    The 6-foot-11, 265-pound former Syracuse University and Paterson (N.J.) Catholic standout hopes his dream will finally materialize this year.

    Watkins, 25, was invited to the New Orleans Hornets training camp later this month and hopes to make the roster.

    “Yes,” he said in a phone interview from Houston where he now lives. “It’s so exciting. You get a chance to go to a camp and have the team invite you there.”

    Tennis

    Patrick McEnroe is stepping down as U.S. Davis Cup captain after the Americans play Colombia Sept. 17-19 in Bogota to focus on his family and the development of American tennis players.

    “It is with a heavy heart that I am resigning as Davis Cup captain, but it is a decision I felt was best for the team and myself right now,” McEnroe said.  “Davis Cup is a significant time commitment and this decision will allow me to focus more energy on my family and to the USTA Player Development program”

    Articles, Purdue

    Jacob Lawson, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound power forward from Oak Ridge (N.C.) Military Academy, verbally committed to Purdue Saturday after a visit there.

    “Yes, I committed,” he said in breaking the news to ZAGSBLOG Monday morning.

    Lawson also considered Seton Hall, West Virginia, Ole Miss and Maryland.

    “Purdue meets Jacob’s academic and basketball needs and he will have the opportunity to compete for minutes as a freshman,” said his coach, Stan Kowalewski. “He loves the staff and trusts them.”
