Tyler Harris Down to 5 Schools

Tyler Harris, whose college list once numbered nearly a dozen schools, is now focusing on just five.

The 6-foot-8 forward from Long Island and St. Benedict’s Prep is considering Iowa, N.C. State, Providence, St. John’s and Wake Forest.

Two officials have been set, to N.C. State Oct. 1 and to Providence Oct. 15.

He still has home visits Sept. 20 with  Iowa and St. John’s. A home visit with Wake could happen this weekend.

UConn is still on the periphery of Harris’s recruitment and head coach Jim Calhoun and Torrel Harris have a strong relationship, but because the Huskies have several wings in Jamal Coombs, Roscoe Smith and Niels Giffey, it is unlikely Tyler will end up there.

Another point of note is that Tesia Harris, Tyler’s older sister and a 6-foot guard, recently transferred to St. John’s from Delaware, where she averaged 12.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season. She will have to sit out a season before suiting up next year for the basketball team.

“She just felt like she wants to play in the WNBA and play overseas and she wasn’t going to get there from the University of Delaware,” Torrel said. “She wants to play at a high level.”

As for whether her transfer will impact Tyler’s decision, Torrel said it remained to be seen how head coach Steve Lavin and his staff pitch Tyler.

“It helps St. John’s but St. John’s has got to have a plan how Tyler’s going to fit in,” Torrel said. “Iowa has a plan. N.C. State has a plan. All the schools have a plan. They’ve got to sell how he fits in.

“He likes St. John’s but they’ve got to have a plan. It’s a tough decision. He wants to go through the whole process.”
