Querrey is Last American Man Sent Packing

NEW YORK – When Sam Querrey and Stan Wawrinka took the Arthur Ashe Stadium court at 1:22 Tuesday afternoon, the wind was blowing stronger than it had all tournament, the arena was bathed in sunlight and there was still an American left in the draw.

Four hours and 28 minutes later, when Wawrinka chipped-and-charged on the second match point on Querrey’s serve and punched home a backhand volley winner, the court was engulfed in shadow and no American remained.

Wawrinka, the No. 25 seed from Switzerland, ousted No. 20 Querrey, 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal.
