No Change in Big East Tourney

There will be no change in the Big East men’s basketball tournament, after all.

The league’s coaches voted unanimously in May to eliminate the double-bye in the tournament held each March at Madison Square Garden, but no change will take place.

For the past two seasons, the top four seeds have received a double-bye into the quarterfinals.

Yet five of the top eight seeds were upset in the first round, prompting criticism of the format.

Under the proposed new format, the top four seeds would have played the bottom four seeds on Tuesday at the Garden. Seed Nos. 5-12 would have squared off in first-round games Wednesday.
