Nobody knows European talent better than ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla.
So I asked Fraschilla to chime in on UConn’s two new German recruits, 7-foot-1 center Enosch Wolf and 6-6 forward Niels Giffey.
“The big guy would be a Top 200 prospect here in the States,” Fraschilla said of Wolf. “He’s a ways off. He’s not on the national team. He’s not really on their radar. He’s probably 6-11 1/2, 7 -feet. He’s fairly skilled, thin, needs to bulk up. He runs fair. He’s an intriguing prospect but shouldn’t be a factor for a while.
“Giffey is a very good, athletic 6-6 swingman that can shoot the ball. He would probably be a Top 100 prospect if he was coming out of high school now.“
Wolf and Giffey join a 2010 UConn recruiting class that includes wing Roscoe Smith, guard Shabazz Napier, center Jeremy Lamb, forward/center Tyler Olander and big man Michael Bradley.
NCAA DENIES PITCHFORD APPEAL
As I first reported on Twitter, the NCAA has denied the appeal of 6-10 DePaul recruit Walter Pitchford to be released from his Letter of Intent.
“They said we can actually do another appeal and take it from there and see what happens,” Walter Pitchford Sr. said.
Pitchford Sr. said he wasn’t sure if his son would enroll at DePaul or what their next step would be.
“At this point I’m not sure. I’m not sure,” he said. “We have to think about it and see what’s gonna be the best.”
Pitchford Sr. previously said he had been told directly by DePaul AD Jean Lenti Ponsetto “that Walter would be granted a release and she said that she had discussed it with the president of the school [Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider].”
Pitchford Sr. said the family hasn’t heard from DePaul since the school issued a statement June 2.
HARRISON NAMED ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH
Larry Harrison, one of the top recruiters and assistant coaches in the game, was named associate head coach at West Virginia.
By my count, he is the third African-American associate head coach in the Big East, following David Cox (Rutgers) and Shaheen Holloway (Seton Hall).
Five other Big East teams have white associate head coaches.
