Cook Hearing Pressure from Kentucky Commits

Quinn Cook is rooming with Michael Gilchrist, Marquis Teague and Tony Wroten at the USA U17 training camp in San Antonio.

With Gilchrist and Teague having already committed to Kentucky, and Wroten leaning there, Cook is already hearing it from his roommates.

“We have the best recruiting class coming in [in 2011],” Gilchrist and Teague tell Cook, the No. 4 point guard in the Class of 2011. “You can join us.”

Despite the pressure from his roomies, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Cook is keeping his college options open and says he’ll take five official visits.

His list includes Kentucky, Villanova, St. John’s, Rutgers, UConn, Wake Forest, North Carolina, UCLA, Arizona, Tennessee and Georgetown.

Cook said he planned to visit Arizona, UConn and Rutgers “in August.”

Cook’s connection to Rutgers comes through associate head coach David Cox. Cook plays for DC Assault and Cox used to coach there.

“Coach Cox being here is definitely a plus,” Cook said. “Coach [Mike] Rice seems like a real good and genuine guy. I definitely like the coaching staff.”

As for St. John’s, Cook said “Coach Steve Lavin reached out to me and told me he’s been interested.”

Villanova is another option because it has a tradition of producing a slew of elite guards.

“Definitely they stand out,” he said. “Coach Jay Wright does a lot of offense with guards. Looking at the NBA, you see a couple Villanova guards.”

Still, Cook is keeping his options open.

“I’m going to take all my five of my visits,” he said. “I want to go it done by the fall.”

  • gilchrist and teague are awesome!!!

  • We were all a little impressed that Coach Cal got Bledsoe and Wall to play together so well, but if he finds a way to play three elite point guards at the same time then he is a magician.

  • There is very little room on the UK roster. Calipari can sign only one more player from the class of 2011 without relying on a one-and-done or a transfer or someone paying his own way to open up another scholarship.

So what player would fill the greatest need? PG Wroten or Cook? SF LeBryan Nash? PF Anthony Davis or Quincy Miller? C Michael Chandler? Do you gamble on landing killer SG Austin Rivers? Tricky stuff. But Cal has really good options, except at SG.

  • Best decision for Cook is to wait.

    Remind me again, AZ.

What are the penalities which the NCAA gave to Memphis Tigers, under Cal?
For the Rose- Grade thing and the three other NCAA violations.

And WHAT are the penalities going to be for Kentucky Calicats?
Yes, there will be NCAA penalities.

The BIG questions..will it be the SAME as the Memphis mess?
Lets see, Kentucky had SEVEN vioalations prior to the Bledsoe Grade things.
YES, everyone in Kentucky knew about it .
This is WHY , Bledsoe was FORCE to get out.

I would say….the NCAA is going to SET an EXAMPLE on Kentucky.
Kentucky, Cali has made the NCAA look like real BIG FOOLS.
The NCAA has been observing Cal for months, after leaving Memphis.
So, WHY did the NCAA allow the Bledsoe GRADES.

WHY did the NCAA do nothing during the season with Bledso…when it knew.

This is going to get VERY DIRTY.

Expect some NCAA changes and replace the NCAA officials observing Cali.
Bring in more deligent and prepared NCAA folks.

  • Prediction on the NCAA penalities on Kentucky for the Bledsoe Grades and the seven other NCAA violations….

    a) Reduction of two scholarship.
But, I hope it is three.
    b) Reduction on recruiting time.
    c) Ban on post season play. For sure.
    d) lack of inst. control….so, AD must be fired.

  • speaking of violations and sanctions….when does arizona get its scholarships back for breaking the rules? is that the reason they cant land anyone? or is it because asu is a better/bigger/cooler program now?

maybe, maybe if every other program gets hit with something then arizona will land a top prospect. maybe, but i still doubt it.

  • Shouldn’t Jesse be worried about his own jail cell right now? A UA fan chiding another program on recruiting violations…Unbelievable.

  • Lets put these violations in perspective shall we. Arizona’s violation consisted of one thing. Lute while suffering from mini-strokes and thus decreased brain function sent out a computer generated letter and bearing his computer generated signature to boosters asking for donations to support a high school basketball tournament at the school. Upon realization of this violation it was immediately reported to the NCAA and the school acted proactively by limiting scholarships and recruiting time. In addition the tournament has been disbanded and the assistant coaches at the time were removed from the program long before Miller was even offered the job.
The difference between Arizona and other schools in line to receive sanctions is Arizona does its best to run an above board program. There is no deny, deny, deny, and then leave town in the middle of the night to go leave another program in ruins. Lute is stand-up and still resides in Tucson and attends the games. You see when your honest you can show your face in public even if you make a mistake.
Arizona’s self sanctions will be fully excepted by the NCAA… Case Closed!
