The Big East men’s basketball tournament could be headed for yet another major change in 2011.
As first reported by Fanhouse.com, the league’s coaches voted unanimously Tuesday to eliminate the double-bye in the tournament held each March at Madison Square Garden. The new format – which would involve all 16 teams playing first-round games over a two-day period – could be approved by the end of next month.
“We’ll probably have an answer by the end of June,” Big East spokesman John Paquette said by phone. “We’ll come to a conclusion by the end of June.”

There’s simply no possible league tournament format to make all 16 BEast hoops programs happy. Excuses by those who blame the BEast format for early round losses in the NCAA tournament ought to face up to the fact that all the other leagues can generate smoke about their formats also. There’s no getting around the truth that winning one game at a time is the basic formula for advancing, no matter what the scenario. Need I say more? I could if anyone would listen.
Also, all of this will be moot if there are defections from the BEast to an enlarged Big Ten–who would then be having the same debate on their league tournament.
