John Calipari continues to draw elite talent from South Florida.
A month after getting a commitment from 6-3 point guard Brandon Knight, Calipari scored a verbal Saturday from 6-11 power forward Eloy Vargas of Miami Dade College during a Saturday visit.
“I am looking forward to playing for Coach Cal, and have him develop my game and help me get to the next level,” Vargas told the Orlando Sun Sentinel.
Vargas initially committed to Florida out of Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage, where he played alongside current Florida guard Kenny Boynton.
He played one season at Florida and then ended up at Miami Dade after suffering ankle problems.
This time around, Arizona, North Carolina and Seattle were also in the mix for Vargas.
He will have two years of eligibility left at Kentucky.
Vargas joins Knight, guard Doron Lamb, wing STacey Poole and forward Enes Kanter in Calipari’s 2010 recruiting haul.
“I think [Vargas’ commitment] secures the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for the second straight year,” Rivals national writer Jerry Meyer told CatsPause.com.
BARRY VISITING UCLA
Remi Barry, a 6-7 wing from Del Oro (Calif.) High who is projected as a potential NBA player, will visit UCLA beginning Sunday, according to his AAU coach, Doc Haynes.
“Leaving at 10 a.m.,” Haynes texted.
Barry, who is originally from France, also ranks St. John’s and Arizona State among his favorites.
“I don’t have any favorite at all,” he said last week. “I have top three. UCLA, St. John’s and Arizona State.”
Haynes said Kentucky, Texas, Baylor and North Carolina also became recently involved after Barry recently had some coursework approved. But no visits have been set to those schools.
MITCHELL WALKING ON AT RUTGERS
Frank Mitchell, a 6-5 forward from Hillsborough (N.J.) High, will walk on at Rutgers, according to Matt Pauls of the NJABC program. Alex Kline first reported the news.
Mitchell averaged 16.2 points and 8.0 boards per game at Hillsborough, according to Gannett New Jersey.
“He has a high IQ for the game, and his overall passion and determination is what separated him,” Hillsborough coach Ian Progin told Gannett New Jersey. “The best way to put it, he really raised the bar. When your best player is your hardest worker, a lot of things fall into place.”

TJ is not scared about Vargas’ commitment to UK. They are in dire need for frontcourt players. IMO, TJ will stick with his commitment, but with each passing day, he’s getting closer for UK.
That’s going to be a lot of freshman players getting a TON of time, more so than this past year, and these are a LOT less talented.

Correction. He was ranked overall in 2008 as the # 33 recruit in the nation, not as a juco player. And TJ still has not signed his LOI. But with Vargas UK has again the # 1 class. Uk would still like to have TJ but don’t need him as bad as they use to. There is still a place for him and if he wants to prepare for the NBA later on, it will be there for him. Also every game is on tv and most of them nationally televised. Hope he comes to UK but if he doesn’t thats okay too.

With 8 (maybe 9?) players gone and having to recruit an entirely new team, Cal is doing what he must to fill out a roster with precious few options this late in the year. Vargas is a four-star recruit described by the Chapel Hill press as highly touted and perhaps Roy’s first choice to fill the void left by the Wear twins. At 6-10 or 6-11, even if he’s a serviceable power forward, that’s a good late addition to UK’s very thin frontcourt.
I have much respect for KU. But as is the case with UK fans, perhaps five percent are an utter embarrassment to their school and to themselves. Please keep in mind, they are not typical Jayhawk material.

Depends on if we run a fast paste or slow paste offense this year. I heard from a source that the whole running up and down the court scoring lots of points makes his legs tired but a slow paste offense doesnt wear out him or the other team as much. its all riding on our pasteness

You know I try to be objective and point out the facts. I try not to hate on any team because by hating on a team, you show them that you are jealous, and I am not jealous of any school in the NCAA, but that is besides the point.
Payne has been widely known to be the sole reason TJones even considered Oregon, with or without a head coach.
The word around college assistants and AAU coaches that I’ve talked to at the Houston Nike EYBL is that if Payne goes to UK, watch for TJones to follow.
Not a package deal, per say, but it will look that way.
Nice pick-up of Vargas by the way. Memphis has a former Miami Dade forward in Will Coleman and he turned it on late in the season. Gonna be a monster. It’ll take Vargas some time to fully adjust to the speed of a NCAA game again, but once he does, dude is super talented.
