Kentucky coach John Calipari will have a new-look staff next season.

Now the question remains whether Calipari himself will stick around.

Calipari has been linked to various NBA openings and sat near the Cavaliers bench during Game 5 of the Celtics-Cavs series in Cleveland.

He has also been mentioned in association with the Chicago Bulls job, possibly in some sort of package deal involving LeBron James.

“I think that any time you’ve got a coach of his quality, there’s going to be conversations about [other jobs],” Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart said Thursday, according to the Louisville Courier Journal. “I’m very confident he’s going to be our coach next year.”

What is certain is that Rod Strickland, the former Knicks point guard, has been demoted from assistant coach to a non-traveling administrative position following a DUI arrest last month.

Rob Mullens, the deputy athletic director, will also have a new administrative position.

“We have a chance to help Rod get to a spot where he is comfortable in his workload and can get back on his feet,” Barnhart said, according to the Courier-Journal.

In a press release, Calipari called Strickland “a vital part of our success here at Kentucky [who] will continue to be an integral part of our future successes in a non-coaching capacity.”

Oregon assistant Kenny Payne has been mentioned as a possible Kentucky assistant even though he is currently under contract with the Ducks.

“As of right now, I have no interest,” Payne said, according to the Courier-Journal. “I’m happy where I am, and I feel comfortable where I am.”

“We definitely want Kenny to be part of our staff,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said, according to The Register-Guard. “He’s still investigating all his options. I’ve been really impressed with his relationship with the players, and his rapport with people here in the department and around the community. He’s really done a great job of helping us make the transition here in our first two or three weeks.

“From an experience standpoint, he’d have a lot to offer. We’d like to have him join our staff, but he does have other options. I’m sure he’s going to give those consideration and let us know in the very near future.”

  • “I’m happy where I am, and I feel comfortable where I am.”

…but if the right offer presents itself, i’m outta here. 10 bucks says he’s gone.

  • The man has had four DUIs.
I’m an atheist, but thank God he hasn’t killed anyone yet. He’s fortunate that the American alcohol business has such strong lobbyists, as to render it a relatively harmless crime.

Kenny Payne is only relevant in that he befriended the rainmaker, WWW.

  • in the nba, coaches aren’t hired for their coaching prowess as much as they are hired for their motivational skills. in college, it’s the opposite unless the coach has 4 potential 1st round draftees on his roster (which basically composes an nba d-league team). just roll out the roundball, sit back and shout out some positive BS when the guys need hyping. this appears to be the niche more befitting of coach cal than when he coached at memphis and umass. as long as he keeps bringing in the talent i seriously doubt he bolts.

1 question to those that don’t agree. why after several bronze metals in world competition did team usa finally employ the services of coach K? answer- the nba coaches suck at x’s and o’s and found it difficult to execute a game plan designed to stop a team vs a player(s) with just motivation.

  • If Cal can work a deal to get Labron to go to Chicago to play with Rose he’ll take the Bulls job . Who wouldn’t . He’s the best coach in colleger basketball now so he’ll demand a record setting contract . I imagine living in Lexington is boring to Cal . He doesn’t play golf . He thrives on the big city atmoshere . Chicago will be perfect for him . The best coach in the game with the best player .

  • Easy on the best coach comment, best recruiter yes Ill admit that but coach no. Cal is a good coach but not the best. I would put Coach K, Roy, Self, Calhoun, and Izzo ahead of him in over all coaching.

  • Lets say he’s the hottest coach in the game today . 162 and 16 over 5 years tends to get one to that status .

  • i think the entire nation witnessed who was better when uwv dismantled uk in the elite8. wasn’t even close. i wouldn’t even put cal in my top10.

  • i’d be easy putting self in that group. 7 years at KU and you can make a strong argument that he failed to meet NCAAT expectations given the talent he had in 4 of those seasons (2004/2005/2008/2009). if self is as good as you the group you have put him in, does a coach that good come up short that often? i think not.

  • 162 and 16 is winning . Not coming up short. Besides everyone knows the Ku NC game was a fluke . The Bulls could care less . Cal could put together 5 1st rounders there and they won’t be leaving after one year.

  • Who else has won 6 straight Conference Championships? Roy couldn’t do it, Bill Self has proven to be a better coach then Roy Williams, and you’re not saying Roy shouldn’t be on the list. This year Coach K put himself on top of the list, but before he got it done everyone was saying Roy was the best in the business, he’s the only guy that’s one 80% of his games.

Roy couldn’t win a championship in 15 years at KU, Self did. Self has recruited better then Roy did to Kansas. Self has won a higher percentage of games at KU then Roy did. They are both Hall of Fame coaches, but Self is better then Roy.

Calipari is not even in the top 5, maybe in the top 10 based on recruiting alone. He’s never made it to a Final Four, if you can’t get that done, then you’re not an Elite Coach.

  • Pasta, you can’t count 2008’s wins, only it’s losses.
All wins from that year were wiped out.

so where does your guy sit after that?

  • people like to claim cal is terrible and uk failed this past season because it didnt get past the elite 8. if that is the standard by which cal and uk is judged, why is it not the case for other programs/coaches? why is losing early multiple times in the NCAAT ok for self but cal gets blasted?

cal and uk has had regular season success, but that doesnt seem to matter. but yet it matters for self.

is winning 1 title enough to be labeled a great coach even if you have many more early and embarrassing flame outs? is 1 title worth that much?

  • Pasta,

    here is the math:
Calipari in the last 5 years:
    134 wins, 17 losses, in 189 games
that’s a 70.1% winning record in games played.
4 of those seasons in CUSA, and 1 @ UK.

compare that to Self, who many have said shouldn’t be in the top 5 of coaches in the game today.
155 wins, 27 losses for a winning percentage of 85.2% in the last 5 years.
Also he’s one a championship, all 5 years he’s won the Big XII every year.
There is no doubt that the Big XII is much harder to win in then at UK, or Memphis.

No One is saying Self is the best, and he’s better then Calipari, so how can Calipari be the best? …and no, just because he’s covered in your lipstick doesn’t make him the best.

  • Boston – Yes, 1 title is all it takes.
Until you have a ring you can never say you were the Best coach.
after that people look at consistency.

Self has had embarrassing losses, but in College 1 loss is all it takes to leave early, and any team can get hot. It’s the teams that win all 6 games that can say “we were the best”

If Self couldn’t make the tournament, or had bad years, then people would say his title was a fluke, but he’s consistently kept KU in the top 10 every year, so his title wasn’t a fluke. Had Williams at Illinois won in 05, people might say, that was a fluke, because he hasn’t shown the ability to do since then, and they weren’t his players.

Had Roy not won a 2nd national championship people would still say, “he couldn’t do it with his own guys” now they say, “he can win with your guys, or he can win with his own.” that second one made a huge difference.

    Titles are what matters.
Coach K is the guy with 4 rings, so until he leaves, or someone wins more, he’s the guy to beat.

  • Boston,

the season does matter. For UK this last season was a GREAT success.
it kept UK at number 1 all time, and they piled up wins.

when you’re judging programs they look at wins, and at titles.
so UK can say “we have the most wins”
UCLA can say “we have the most titles”

  • do people consider gary williams to be a great coach? 1 title and a boat load of nothing. jim boheoim the same thing. how many years has he under performed at syracuse? but he is a legend despite not having much title winning success. mike davis was 1 game away from winning a title at IU. was he that close to greatness? if so…why is he where he currently is? why is bill self considered to be so much better then all these other 1 title winning coaches?

the reality is its a lot more complicated and deeper then that. but cal doesnt have the one title and others do so thats what will shape the argument for the time being.

much like most of cal’s “critics”, the driving force behind the criticism is mostly to feel better about ones self.

  • I don’t want to get into this silly argument but I cannot understand how anyone could defend Self so vigorously after the UNI loss. That was one of the biggest choke-jobs in the history of college basketball.

  • why is the big 12 so much better? because you say so? i would argue any conference that rolls over for 1 team isnt that much of a conference.

in the last 5 years nebraska, ou, isu, tt, cu, osu, mizzu, bu are average 20-21 wins a season or less. that means 8 out of the 12 teams in the conference are average if not worse then everyone else.

and dont give me the “we beat each other up stuff”. the NCAAT success isnt there to back it up. only 5 big 12 teams in 5 years have made it past the sweet 16 not counting KU. no final fours in that group.

so really its like most conferences. 1 really good team. usually 1 other decent team. then a bunch of average to below average teams. so i dont see how you can claim that the big 12 is “no doubt” harder then the SEC or any other conference for that matter. other then being a homer.

  • Self 100% is on that list 6 straight conference titles 4 Big12 tournament titles, and 1 national championship in 7 years, yeah pretty impressive. Yeah it sucks when you dont go as far in the tournament as youd like but at the end of the year only 1 team wins a championship. If Cal is on that list he needs a title to be there its that simple. If he was a great coach he would have an 08 ring not Self he wouldve fouled, and thats coming form a Kansas fanatic but thats the beauty of the game no ties and only 1 winner. Not to say he isnt a good coach but he needs a title to be great.

  • Better check your math Doc . Here’s the record …..33 -4 (2005) 33-4(2206)38-2(2007) 33 -4 (2008) at Memphis ……last year at Ky 35-3 . Thats 172 and 17 ……thats 90% . Thats also 5 conference championships in a row. That’s also either a 1 seed or a 2 seed 5 straight years . Aside from the fluke loss to KU …..he’s the hottest coach in America …pro or college . Next

  • Yet no official Final 4’s

  • lol . Umass still hangs there banner ….as does Memphis . Hypothetical stripping of a record doesn’t change what really happened …especially in cases whre the NCAA is reaching . His record stands ….and the Chicago Bulls may well pay him double ehat he makes at KY because of that record . Next hater.

  • Goodbye calimari. Nearly half the people in the espn poll say you are bad news for uk. The people have spoken.

  • Why would Cap leave this. Enjoy the video! Go Big Blue! Why would any recruit not want to be a part of Big Blue Nation. http://kentuckysportsradio.com/?p=51838

  • Is that why #1 Recruit Josh Selby didn’t even want to show up for a campus visit? Just asking….

  • WRONG, Memphis and UMASS do not hang their banner. And you cannot count the wins or losses from 2008. That whole season was wiped clean.

Bulls won’t hire him because of his record at Memphis or UK. It’s his relationship with WWW and LeBron, not to mention DRose that put his name into motion at Chicago.

He flamed out as a head coach last time in the NBA, and would the next time. Simply put, his coaching doesn’t translate to the next level.

  • fearthephog25-

Selby was not Kentucky’s #1 recruit for point guard. We got our #1 guard that we were going after and that was Knight. If he had shown up on campus he would not be a Jayhawk.

What did you think about the video? Pretty awesome- don’t you think? Kentucky’s midnight madness with all the fireworks and 24,000 screaming fans vs. Kansas and their players doing a role play like they are auditioning for a play. How far did Kansas make it this year?

In 2009-2010 Season our players were hooping it up, dancing and having fun. By the way they played 38 games this season with over 740,000 fans watching them which was #1 in the country. At Kansas, it was all the off court problems with Basketball and Football. No Wonder so much talk about the Big 12 teams are talking about joining the BIG 10 and SEC. Don’t see very many conferences talking about picking up the Jayhawks.

  • LOL I don’t click weak links. They probably don’t wanna pick up the Jayhawks because they don’t wanna lose or have to play in The Phog. 60 Wins at home. Make any excuse you choose about Selby, he wasn’t buying what cal had to offer. You’d br lying to yourself saying you wouldn’t want Josh. So you guys always bash every player that chooses any other program. Saying you are better off without them, or saying they were not your #1 target. LOL Same old song and dance. Your best chance to win it was this past year, didn’t happen and won’t happen anytime soon. Fact: young teams do not win championships. Why is uk sweating their recruting class this year and in a desperate hour trying to get anybodt to campus this week? LOL I gonna love how you guys instantly try to claim them as a 5 star recruit, when they are 4th or 5th pickings. Goodluck though…

  • Yahoo Sports Reports:

Calipari tells the kids it’s all rumor, except for the part about James, the MVP, wanting him. The Bulls deliver the bonus of Derrick Rose(notes) as the star point guard, and Rose does love his old college coach at Memphis.

Yet, the desperation of Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert makes Calipari’s hiring at $5 million-$6 million a genuine possibility, should James simply say the word.

LMAO!! Goodbye!! I wish you well in the NBA.

  • wow you know scott paxson along with bulls owners to KNOW their decision making and what they think of cal. thats impressive for a guy named “tsmooth” posting on a blog. didnt know you were that connected to have such inside information to know exactly what an NBA team will and wont do. thats a HUGE scoop….the typical NBA beat writers dont even have that information.

i guess self’s coaching doesnt translate either since no one ever comes looking for him for an NBA job.

  • was he invited to visit?

  • That’s true. 99% of college coaches will not translate to the next level. That much is certain. The only exception that I know of is Larry Brown.

Actually, I do know people around the situation. It’s called having “contacts”, and you receive those when you work in my profession for a while.

tsmooth is actually a name my mom gave me, but you can call me TD, if that helps.

And, most NBA writers know those are the exact reasons why any NBA team is interested in hiring Calipari.

I know it’s hard to fathom that Calipari is actually bigger than your program, but it’s true. And no, I am not some bitter fan. My job is to cover Memphis athletics, and I never liked Cal a lot.

I just hope he doesn’t leave UK the same way he left UMASS and Memphis, but his track record shows that he probably will.

  • Come on now. Strickland got his punishment. He was removed fromt he coaching staff and giv en charge of administration duties. Nevermind, Strickland ASKED to be reassigned.

This is the punishment. Drive drunk, ask for a different role, and the university can claim he was demoted.

  • might want to try and get better contacts.

  • No, they are absolutely right when it comes to Calipari and a potential NBA hiring.

Why else would a NBA team go after him besides the reasons I listed above?

He is a RECRUITER, not a COACH. He has ties to WWW, LEBRON, DRose, LEON ROSE, NIKE, DWADE, and CHRIS BOSH.

That is why he is being looked at for potential job openings. Not because of his success in college, or some may say lack thereof, but because he can keep LeBron and maybe another star happy with his system. THAT is all.

  • because you have wrapped your brain around this agenda and bias you cant possibly fathom any other possibility. especially considering you have zero contact with people in the room making such decisions.

your “lack of college success” comment says it all.

  • I’ll take that bet.

  • You mean 1/3 right?

    http://kentuckysportsradio.com/?p=51240

Perhaps math isn’t your strong suit.

  • I don’t want Selby, I said it as soon as he d/c’ed from Tenn. back in the early fall/late summer. I’m not lying. At that time, he was expected to pick UK. You can even go back and look for it!

  • With Vargas commit today it moves UK to the #1 recruiting class according to Jerry Meyer of Rivals and Evan Daniels of Scout…

Still have a chance with T.Jones as well…

    Go Big Blue!

  • “Wish” is the word you need to focus on.

  • Where is Kansas ranked? Wonder who Self is still trying to recruit? He must be on Summer Vacation. Cal Continues to bring them in. Wow what a coach. You can’t be a winning coach without being a great recruiter! Cal is the Man!

  • I’ll gladly get into a silly argument when some bean-head throws around numbers that don’t actually reflect the situation accurately, at least in terms of how good a coach is.

Doc, the hatchet job you just did on statistics is sooooooo bad that I will not actually go into the details. I will only say two things. 1) Your math is horrid, (I get that you only included the wins then divided them by the total games 189, but you can’t do that in Stats and call that a Win percentage, you have to call all of the other games losses, then the 70.1% win rate is applicable, else you need only note that the other games don’t count, in which case, THEY DON’T COUNT. Yet after all of this, it STILL doesn’t reflect the situation in TRUE, not NCAA, terms of who is the best coach, Win% wise) 2) You were hardly descriptive in anything. Win% also comes from OOCS, which, was much stronger in Cal’s favor at Memphis, I will concede a push, this year, for UK vs. KU. You also fail to mention HOW the Big 12 is “stronger” than the SEC, we will take it to be known that all of the Big 6 conferences are better than the non-Big Six since it’s pretty much agreed upon by all.

I could go on, as I am a Math Major, but I won’t. Look, I’m not here to stir things up, but as a Math Major, I HATE logic errors, especially when they try and throw numbers around.

  • Last I checked it was 43% and climbing. LOL Where is the ESPN Link? too scared to show it? I already know what the #s are. Maybe your eyes are crossed, try looking at them sober.

  • Hence: NAIVE. LMAO!!!!!!

  • You guys say that about every recruit that rejects uk. LOL It gets kind of old. NEXT! “NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!!!”

  • Kansas is looking good my friend, just like every year. If cal can’t win with 5 potential NBA picks, he just will never get it done. Young teams do not win championships. Like I said b4, last year was their best chance. Denied.

  • uk cannot surpass Memphis’ recruiting class. Who is Vargas? LOL *Sarcasm*

  • Looks as though Vargas committed to uk, which means TJ was destined to be a UW Husky all along. Guess that means they will not be hiring the Oregon Assistant Coach now, huh? LOL

  • Climbing? Calling me out for my link? Provide the ESPN link then bigshot, I sure as hell couldn’t find it. Perhaps you are the one “too scared”. Remember foggy-glasses, you are not supposed to drink the bong water.

  • Ya, your comment is off the charts hilarious…..I’ll tell you why just as soon as I understand it……….

  • The special olympics are starting soon, if you register you can get accepted.

  • LOL ROFL, you are soooooo funny fearthephog, I am laughing hard right now!!! ROFL WAFFLE HAHAHAHAHA.

  • ME TOO LOL!!!!!!!

  • I thought you could hook it up, being that you are the president. LOL!!!!!!

  • Try sobering up. LOL

  • SCARED!!!!!

  • But seriously, Selby is not a great character. Perhaps a letter to Jerry Meyer will help set that straight. I mean, you know this from finding my previous postings right! Oh, you are too drunk to look. That’s my bad.

  • Being the president of the special olympics doesn’t automatically qualify somebody as “special,” as it were. Seriously, I’ve heard snappier comebacks from a bowl of rice krispies.

  • BLAH BLAH BLAH, CONTINUE BASHING CUZ HE REJECTED uk. LOL YOUR WASTING YOUR TIME, NOT READING IT. BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!!!!

  • GOOD ONE, SERIOUSLY RICE CRISPIES??LOL SO SO CHEESY.

  • ROFFLE WAFFLE!!

  • uk TROLLS ARE FUNNT, BUT WHAT IS EVEN MORE AMUSING. READING THEIR DESPERATE CRIES AND PRAYERS ON catpause.com. TRYING TO GO AS FAR AS GETTING BUS LOADS TO DRIVE THE 8 HOURS TO HOWARD UNIVERSITY AND STALK TJ’S SISTER. THAT IS HILARIOUS, AND CREATING A WEBSITE TO KEEP CALIPARI FROM GOING TO THE NBA. CULT STATUS I BELIVE. LMAO!!! ROFL!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU WANT A GOOD LAUGH, GO SEE FOR YOURSELF. Sorry for all caps. Was texting at the same time.

  • The ESPN Poll on College Basketball page. Can’t miss it, but you probably don’t read ESPN. Because you are always on catpause plotting the next bus trip. Meow! Meow!

  • featherphog25—

You need to stick to just reporting on the Jayhawks. Vargas coming to Kentucky has nothing to do with Jones. Kanter, Jones and Vargas will start. Payne is coming. UK had to post the position for 7 days so you should hear something after Friday and shortly after that you will hear Jones coming to Kentucky.

What is Self doing these days? Does he take several months off from recruitment? Maybe he is enrolled in how to keep a team out of trouble? LOL!

  • Watch out! The classic attack my coach, I will attack your coach move. LOL So predictable. Self is not the one who has anything to prove. He has titles and final fours on his resume, something that cannot be said for that guy at uk. LOL Once again…DENIED!! Are you stuoid or something, have you not heard your coach plans to run four guards? That is if he stays at uk, which is looking like a “NO”. As of late, he seems to be listening to the NBA Market. Running four guards is knowing you are out sized, because that is all you can do. Just ask any UW Husky fan. That is what they had to do last season. But think as you wish, whatever helps you pass out at night. LOL

  • Ya, you can miss it, otherwise you would have linked it. Perhaps you don’t know how to provide a link? Squaak! Squaak! (Or whatever sound a jayhawk makes, chirp chirp, perhaps?)

  • Says the alcoholic, project much?

  • HEY, I CAN GET MAD AND WRITE IN ALL CAPS TOO. EVERYBODY LOOK AT ME AND MY POST!

  • eVeN FUnNieR iS TRyinG TO reaD AlL oF YOuR CommMMMMeNTS. *hiccup*

  • I don’t copy and paste like uk trolls all day, trying to justify thrir being irrelevant and mia for over a decade. LOL!!

  • Better save your mother some….

  • You are quite the specimen, aren’t you blablablasphy. Don’t get enough attention at home? LOL

  • Be unpredictable (by your logic that is don’t respond). Selby and T. Taylor will cause a major uproar and will fight each other and the whole football team. Remember, don’t be predictable (by your standards). Have fun with infractions next year.

(I got my money on fearthephog25 responding, do you?)

  • Oh, belive me. You know what I am saying. LOL catpause is good entertainment, shows your true fanbase. Like nobody has jobs or anything. LOL

  • Can you say 37th. on juco transfer list?????????

    LMAO!!

Shouldn’t gamble your disability check money like that. I bet you had your money on uk winning it all too. Denied!! LOL

  • LMAO!! Did a uk fan just mention the word infraction? Good one!! Sir jinx in the house tonight. Enjoy your new coach or finding one for that matter. Going to be hard so late in the game.

  • LOL. So going to the Elite Eight with tons of talent multiple times is college success? Last time I checked, a title counts as title success.

And I do have contact with the people making those decisions. Contact through the people I know. It’s a perk of being one of the media.

No bias, actually, man. I hated Calipari when he was at Memphis. So you can get over that one and try to use a new excuse on me.

THOSE are the ONLY reasons as to why he is being considered for a NBA job.

Tom Izzo is the best fit right now for a NBA head coaching gig, but he isn’t going to get the time of day because he isn’t a sexy name.

If you seriously think any of Calipari’s so-called college success is a by product of his coaching, then you’re drinking too much blue kool-aid. His “success” is the reason of getting good recruits who fit in a system. Nothing more, nothing less.

    NEXT

  • No, you just post WRONG information all day. I got it.

  • That hurt. Not as bad as looking at you, but it still hurt.

  • Dude you are not that funny (not funny at all really), get over yourself.

  • Actually I don’t know what you are saying, I don’t speak drunk.

  • You owe me money.

  • You owe me double the money.

  • People saying Self is on vacation and why he is not recruiting, come on really. Yeah it would of been sweet to get get Jones but oh well, we got the #1 guy in the nation. Last year 2 four star guys red shirted, a 5 star freshman pg didnt see much time due to the depth, a 4 or 5 star pf (depending on where you look) same as the pg, and a 4 star seven foot freshman same, well hell looks like a lot of depth to me and the reason Self didnt need a 5 man class. I have always like and respected UK, I was a fan of Tubby, and Pitino but since Cal has been there its getting rediculous, I can give 2 sh@4s who he recruits, my team has not fallen off at all.
