Birch Says Providence is Favorite; Beal Committed to UF

Khem Birch is a 6-foot-9 power forward from Fitchburg (Mass.) Notre Dame Prep ranked No. 3 in the Class of 2012 by the New England Recruiting Report.

After taking an unofficial visit to Providence Thursday, Birch lists the Friars as his leader.

“Yeah,” he told ZAGSBLOG contributor Alex Kline. “It’s so beautiful. The facilities are amazing. I like how small the campus is.”

Siena, Virginia, UConn, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Pitt, Purdue and Notre Dame are among the other schools involved with Birch, who recently left The Winchendon (Mass.) School for Notre Dame Prep.  (LIST WAS UPDATED)

Yet Birch has developed a close relationship with Providence assistant Pat Skerry.

“Coach Skery showed me around the campus,” Birch said. “He showed me the library, practice gym, the coach offices. I even saw coach Keno Davis. He is a really nice man. I also saw the Dunkin Donuts Centre, which is nice because the only gym is basically for the basketball team.”

Birch said he may commit “soon.”

“Soon I most likely will, but I want to see how [incoming freshman point guard] Naadir [Tharpe] and the [Providence] team do after the 2011 season,” Birch said.

BEAL NOT DECOMMITTING

Bradley Beal, the No. 1 shooting guard in the Class of 2011 out of St. Louis, Miss. Chaminade, said he has no plans to decommit from Florida.

“Naw, just rumors,” he said.
