Rice to Rutgers; Hurley, Cimmino Endorse Hire

Mike Rice will be the next head coach at Rutgers, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to SNY.

A press conference is expected later this week.

Rice, 41, signed a contract extension April 9 at Robert Morris through the 2016-17 season. But that was before the Rutgers job came open when Fred Hill resigned April 19 after unleashing a profanity-filled tirade at a Rutgers baseball game and then defying Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti’s order to avoid future games.

  • This is just sad. Coach signs a contract extension thru 2017 which I’m sure gave his players, incoming recruits and boosters a sense of relief that he’s committed to the program. Then, not even a month later he leaves for another gig.

Yet the NCAA handcuffs kids with letters of intent.

  • Why do I right now feel the same as I did when the hiring of Bannon and Hill were first announced? I may feel better when Coach Rice announces his staff and his initial recruits; a few highly regarded JUCOS and transfers are fine by me, so long as they’re bona fide student-athletes who are on track toward ‘earning’ their degrees.
