Terrence Jones picks Washington |
Terrence Jones will follow his teammate Terrence Ross to college.
At a press conference at Portland (Ore.) Jefferson, the 6-8 Jones reached out to a table holding six baseball hats and picked up a black Washington Huskies hat as the assembled crowd let out a roar.
“I wanted to be close to home. Like I’ve been saying since the eighth grade, I wanted to play with Terrence Ross and I just feel that Coach [Lorenzo] Romar is like a father figure to me,” Jones told the crowd and the more than 25,000 people watching on UStream.
The No. 3 power forward in the class of 2010 and The Oregonian’s two-time Class 5A Player of the Year, Jones chose the Huskies over Kansas, Kentucky, Oregon, Oklahoma and UCLA. He visited Kansas last weekend, giving the Jayhawk fans hope.
The 6-5 Ross earlier declared for Washington, confirming the story first reported by Alex Kline on ZAGSBLOG.com Sunday night.
He picked the Huskies over Kentucky, Kansas, Oregon and Oklahoma.
Ross was named the Oregon Class 5A player of the year during his sophomore season at Jefferson in 2008. He transferred to Montrose Christian, only to return to Jefferson in February and be ruled ineligible by the Oregon School Activities Association.
Jones and Ross will be part of a five-man recruiting class at Washington.
The class includes 6-7 forward Desmond Simmons out of Richmond, Calif.; 7-foot junior college center Aziz N’Diaye from the College of Southern Idaho; and 6-5 shooter C.J. Wilcox, a redshirt last season.

Hmmmm…just like I said before; TJ isn’t leaving the Pac10!
So many arrogant UK fans on the ESPN boards GUARANTEEING they land TJ. Welcome back to earth!

kujayhawk08 / April 30, 2010
Best part of this, you are happy you have to play Ross and Jones twice as year, two loses for Arizona this year, ha. Rock Chalk
On a side note, i’m excited to see
Selby Tyshawn Mario Little Marcus and Trob Start next year.
/
UAWildcat / April 30, 2010
I do not disagree that these commitments put UW as the favorite this coming season but putting UA down for to loses to them is alittle premature. UW normally does not play well in Tucson. I like Arizona’s chances of finishing a close second to UW. I personally would have rather ajones commit to UK since UA does not ay them.
/
ArizonaWildcat27 / April 30, 2010
Think again. Washington hasn’t won in Tucson in years! We beat them by 17 last year and we return everyone except Wise next year.
We will be experienced and Miller will out coach Romar again no doubt. I like our chances!

By the way, Terrance Jones didn’t sign LOI, scumbag Cali called him after his announcement, Lol @ UK.
/
Michael / April 30, 2010
Jayhawk08 I just read that too. Hard to believe but not really considering it’s Calipari. I’m sure Self called him too right? And Ben Howland.
It’s funny- a couple weeks ago UK fans (or some of them) were insisting Calipari had never gone after a committed player. It should be fun to see them spin this one.
/
ArizonaWildcat27 / April 30, 2010
That guy truly is a snake in the grass! I mean what is he going to say to him? You made the wrong choice, by the way here is 100k and a brand new escalade. lol

RockChalkWoody / April 30, 2010
Kentucky coach John Calipari called Jones after his announcement and Jones was on the phone for a very long time. About 15 minutes. Reading body language, Jones seemed pained.
He told me, “You hurt thousands of people just as much as you make people happy.”
Classy move by a classy coach.
/
fearthephog25 / April 30, 2010
Calimari really makes himself look like a fool and a sore loser.
/
RockChalkWoody / April 30, 2010
I’d bet that Capel, Howland, Altman, and Self probably called or texted Jones & congratulated him.
/
UAWildcat / April 30, 2010
If Jones doesn’t sign with UW that would make twocomits he stole from Romarright?
/
ArizonaWildcat27 / April 30, 2010
He’ll sign with Washington. No way he makes a public announcement like that than turns around and signs with someone else, ain’t going to happen!
Damn, Calipari just makes me sick. This is one guy who WILL get his in the end. Only question is whether or not he is going to take Kentucky down with him.
/
tsmooth / May 1, 2010
Actually, there is plenty of talk around Terrence that he may switch his commitment to UK. Apparently, Cal is the only coach to call him and still recruit him to his program. The others just sent their best wishes.
Calipari needs TJones mainly so he can fully implement the DDMO.
If TJones does switch his commitment, UK will look pretty bad to the public.
/
blasphemy / May 1, 2010
Let’s start by the fact that he wasn’t sure in the first place. A link on how Calipari “called” him would be nice. If you link something that says that Calipari ***called*** him, then I will concede. Just a link, that’s all I ask. If you can’t produce it, well, we will go from there.
/
blasphemy / May 1, 2010
Nvm. I found it. And I CONCEDE ON THIS ONE. I don’t like it. If true, the comment by Calipari was a little over the top.

Agreed.

Really does sound bad when a coach says that to a recruit. If Pastner did that, I would be so pissed at the fact that he just, in a way, put a HIGH SCHOOL kid down.
People forget these are teenagers. They shouldn’t be spoken to like that. That just looks bad. Why would he do that? Seriously?
/
rbcat / May 1, 2010
What about Coach K still recruiting Austin Rivers after he committed to Florida? I forgot Coach K does everything by the book.
These Kids want to play for Cal. You Kansas, Arizona and other fans are just jealous. Big Blue Nation is the Best Program in the country and we have the greatest fans and tradition. Admit it and move on… I know it tears at your stomach but it is what it is and you know it. Go Big Blue
/
blasphemy / May 1, 2010
I don’t mind him recruiting the kid after he VERBALLY committed. Soon as he signs the papers though, all bets are off.
However, if he did, infact, just as the reporter said he did, say that to TJ……. then I condone that, heavily.
We will find out in a couple of days if anything was spun, because, it does sound extreme. But if Cal did say that, I will condone him for that. Make no mistake about it.
/
blasphemy / May 1, 2010
Dude, I’m a UK fan, and that’s not what the issue that I’m reffering to is, though the Cal/Uk haters are. The telling the kid he let “thousands of fans down” thing is what I’m talking about. However, I’m not 100% convinced Cal did do that though. I remain skeptical about that. But if he did, I will condone him for that.
/
rbcat / May 1, 2010
HIs Parents seemed like they were educated parents. If Cal made that exact comment to him, I don’t see Jones removing from his comment from his Twitter account that I am a Husky. That was removed within an hour of his announcement. Truth is he did hurt a lot of UK fans—of the 25,000 fans streaming online with the announcement—20,000 were UK fans. I could see that Cal said Big Blue Nation is disappointed because we wanted him. If the kid was not interested. It’s not even midnight on the west coast and he could avoid all this drama. He is interested and right now he feels like he might not have made the right decision.
Lets leave at that. What Cal and him said his between them. I am sure he recapped with his educated parents and they must have agreed with what Coach Cal said. If his parents are not upset—why should we be upset.
/
blasphemy / May 1, 2010
You still don’t put kids in HS down like that. Once again, I will wait until the dust clears though until I make my final bad/not bad verdict on whether what Cal did was wrong. But, you are right in the sense that if his parents OR TJ are not upset then we shouldn’t be. Still though, I am judging this on how I would want to be treated. Like I said though, it could very well could have been taken out of context, which wouldn’t suprise me. But I will take the high road on this though if it is confirmed that the context that the author was trying to convey was indeed the actual context. Go Big Blue.

My problem with this is two-fold. First of all, there were plenty of UK fans trashing Leslie, a high school kid, after he signed with NC State. The comments I read on Larry Vaught’s blog went something like this: “That’s OK. I heard he was a head case. He just went there because he knew Jones was coming to Lexington.” Then, at a press conference viewed by almost 25,000 people online, Jones announces he is going to Washington, only to have this mess crop up. Funny how since it might work out in UK’s favor I’m not hearing any “I heard he was a head case.” Kind of hypocritical.
The bigger issue is Calipari. Simply put, he is the worst person in all of college basketball. Are you kidding me? Calling an impressionable high school kid minutes after he announced to lay a guilt trip on him to try and get him to go back on his word? “You hurt thousands of people just as much as you make people happy.” What a completely classless, low-life loser. Come on Cal. I know your legacy just took a minor hit losing another recruiting battle, but try and summon a small amount of dignity and move on. What a worthless excuse for a human being. NBA, please, PLEASE do the college basketball world a favor and take this scum off of our hands.
And Kentucky fans, just FYI, I have no problem with your school, your team, your successes, or your accomplishments. I would hate Calipari no matter where he coached. If KU were to ever employ him, it would make me sick to my stomach.
/
basketballblueblood / May 1, 2010
ArizonaWildcat27,
I apologize for the ‘arrogant’ UK fans that you speak of. I am a UK fan and from Lexington, KY. Still, I want Terrence Jones to be happy with whatever decision he makes, as I’m sure most UK fans feel the same way. He’s obviously a nice kid and deserves all the happiness he can get.
A lot of what you deem arrogance is just still a sensation of UK fans disbelief in how down we were and how competitive we’ve become as of late.
However, with that being said, T. J. still hasn’t signed his loi and it looks like he may already be reconsidering his decision and may ultimately decide to come to KY.
Crazy as that sounds, it’s true. So, until we know for certain, I guess us KY fans will hold off our ‘return to earth’ as you so humorously put it.
/
tsmooth / May 1, 2010
I don’t mind the recruitment of a verbally committed recruit, either. That’s part of basketball. My issue, and it appears that your’s is too, is his comment about letting thousands of people down. That is laying a guilt trip down on the kid. I feel bad for all these high school recruits because of situations like these. They have tons of pressure on them to choose the right school, and the second they don’t, the fanbase and/or coaching staff lays it down hard on them. It’s disgusting to me.
/
blasphemy / May 1, 2010
Actually, to rain on your parade, Leslie has been viewed by many, not just UK fans, to be a bit of a Lazy character. Echoed by a few recruiting experts, Evan Daniels to name one. But, ya, I’m sure it’s just UK fans. Oh, also:
newdiabolic316 says:”My problem with this is two-fold. First of all, there were plenty of UK fans trashing Leslie, a high school kid, after he signed with NC State. later goes newdiabolic316 on to say: “And Kentucky fans, just FYI, I have no problem with your school, your team, your successes, or your accomplishments. I would hate Calipari no matter where he coached. If KU were to ever employ him, it would make me sick to my stomach.”
Contradiction. I’m done for the night.

I just read that an article from his hometown that said he called Coach Cal. So does that sill put Calipari as the worst person in College Basketball. What About coach K. I am sure Billy D thinks the same about Coach K for talking to his recruit that had verbally said Florida was his school. I have not heard anybody but Florida fans comment on that.
Cal is a great coach. He is a visionary. He knows what these top recruits want. They want to play and go to the NBA. He is hated because he is ahead of his peers in all levels.
Want to talk about a scum bag—we have one up the road about 75 miles…Rick Pitino. Gets a lady pregnant on a couch in family restaurant whose husband is on his staff. Hires a a high school coach assistant coach last year hoping that would give him Teague. Now that is a scum bag. Those are all comments that are true. You are referencing Cal on something that he did not even do…Jones called him. You are the scumbag! Get your story straight.
/
tsmooth / May 1, 2010
Rbcat, dude, everybody was recruiting Rivers after he VERBALLY committed to Florida. Every player that verbals early is still recruited by other schools. Like when Will Barton verballed to Memphis, Cal was still recruiting him. It’s part of the process, and there is nothing wrong with it. You can recruit a player until he signs a LOI.
Lots of players want to play for lots of coaches. Saying all players want to play for Cal is false. I will not bring up a list of players that UK lost out on because I don’t need to get into another discussion with an upset fan, but every player does not want to play for Cal.
Actually, I’m not jealous. I’m pretty happy with my school, and always have been.
Your entire last paragraph is a matter of opinion. Every fan considers their school to be the best in the country. Get back at me when you have some facts.
/
tsmooth / May 1, 2010
Ok…not a L’ville fan, but I’ll bite.
Cal hired Dajuan Wagner’s dad onto the Memphis staff. Offered Richard Hendrix’s teammate and lost out on both. Hired Tyreke Evans personal trainer on staff at Memphis. Had WorldWide Wes arrange a SAT test to be taken for DRose in Detroit, where WWW is from and is wayyy far away from Chicago. Put in recruits’ LOI that there is an “out-clause” if he leaves, and took some of them with him to UK. Just to name a few things Cal has done.
Cal is not a great coach or a visionary. He got his DDMO from Vance Wahlberg. He is a great recruiter, actually he is a closer since his assistants do 95% of his recruiting; Cal closes the deals. Most of the recruits Cal gets are headed to the NBA no matter where they go. His coaching, or lack thereof, doesn’t help or hurt the players. Most, if not all, leave his schools the same way they entered. They haven’t developed, but they haven’t floundered either. The only player I know of that he’s developed is Rodney Carney.
Not a “hater” of UK. Just had to point out some things. Don’t blow this out of proportion, dude.
/
basketballblueblood / May 1, 2010
RockChalkWoody,
Nice name, by the way. The quote you’re referring to was Terrence Jones expressing his own feelings to a reporter. Not what John Calipari said to him. Coach Cal wished him well and it was Terrence who started rethinking his decision.
When a player is recruited by a coach, the teams they have in their final selection are given a courtesy call to advise that they were not the final selection. Coaches that care enough, call the player so he/she doesn’t have to call them because they understand how hard it is for a player to make that call.
I would think that a fan of a Blue Blood like KU wouldn’t stoop to such levels.
And in answering ArizonaWIldcat27, if good players come to KY because they are paid, why, then, would they also go to Arizona? For the storied basketball tradition?
KY is the biggest fishbowl in college basketball. We cannot hide a mistake or a wrong.
Why don’t fans worry about being ‘fans’ of their own teams and not try to hate other teams. When someone makes a comment on players getting paid, they are insulting the integrity of the players, their families, the University faculty, the city, the state, etc.
Such comments are irresponsible and ignorant.
I wish KU and Arizona nothing but the best. I’m an Army vet, and I would have gladly taken a bullet for any Jayhawk fan or any AZ Wildcat fan.
Let’s keep it classy.
/
newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
“He is ahead of his peers in all levels.” Really? I mean, I’m sure you’re right, what with all of those national championships he’s won. What? He doesn’t have any? Oh, well he’s come close, he’s surely ahead of his peers in number of Final Four appearances. What? He doesn’t technically have any of those either, as the two trips he’s made have since been vacated? Oh.
Coach Cal is not a great coach. He is a great recruiter. I’ll give you that, but until he wins something or accomplishes something that is not subsequently vacated, he is not a great coach. Lots of coaches have won their conference, but they are not great coaches.
Also, as blasphemy asked someone earlier…provide the link. If you have a report supporting your claim that Jones called Calipari, provide it. Then, if it is true I may reconsider. As for your claims about coach K, this is the first I’m hearing of this. I don’t follow every school’s recruiting news, so if the kid didn’t have KU on his list then I probably didn’t hear about it. I’m sure it goes on somewhat with underclassmen (KU got a committment from high school sophomore Zach Peters about a week ago, but I’m sure he’ll get a call or text here and there until he can sign a letter of intent), but that’s a little different from calling someone minutes after they announce they are signing somewhere else.
/
newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
Agree with your statement about Cal not coaching players up. I’d add Chris Douglas-Roberts to the list of players he’s developed, and maybe Marcus Camby since he stayed at UMass 3 years. Still, you’re right he can’t take credit for getting guys like Wall, Rose, & Cousins into the NBA. They were lottery picks before setting foot on a college campus.
/
rbcat / May 1, 2010
Dude you are the one blowing out of proportion. As a Kansas Fan–you are upset. First you were in the top two for Jones–that was Washington and Kentucky and second Self is losing the battles to Calipari. You would not have gotten Selby if Cal wanted him. Cal wanted Knight. He backed off Selby and that is the reason he signed with Kansas. He had talked talk to Selby for over a month.
Jump over to Twitter and look at Jeff Goodman’s (Goodmanfox) comment that was just posted a few hours ago…
” Self isn’t regarded at the same level now in terms of recruiting as Calipari.”
It’s simple Self could compete when Cal was at Memphis but with Cal at Kentucky Self and the Kansas program will always be regarded as the runner up to Kentucky.
Good night.

newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
What’s the contradiction exactly? That I made 3 points instead of the post being two-fold? Or that I have a problem with UK fans complaining about Leslie then went on to say that “I have no problem with your school, your team, your successes, or your accomplishments.”? Because it’s funny, I didn’t go on to say “I have no problem with your school, your team, your successes, your accomplishments, or your fans”. Yeah, I never said I didn’t have a problem with fan behavior. Don’t worry, all fans are fickle like that. KU fans clowned on Xavier Henry for chosing Memphis. There were all kinds of posts laughing at him for getting dunked on by Willie Warren in high school (they would say Warren T bagged him), then they welcomed him in with open arms once Calipari bolted for UK. I didn’t like that either. Or was there something else that was a contradiction? Please, enlighten me.
Regardless of whether anyone else was saying Leslie was a head case, my problem was that we weren’t hearing that from UK fans until after he said he wasn’t coming to UK. Again, it was just sour grapes. If he were to have pulled a Terrence Jones and not signed his LOI, you guys would still be jocking him.

Wow. Just outright delusional. Cal wanted both Knight & Selby. It worked with Bledsoe & Wall, he would have gladly taken both this time around too. He hadn’t talked to Selby in a month because Selby’s mom didn’t want him playing there, she’d been advised to keep her son away from Worthless William Wesley. I mean, you guys signed Doron Lamb, you gonna tell me that Calipari wanted Lamb and not Selby as well? Because if so, that is one monumental blunder in recruiting! As for what Jeff Goodman said, didn’t I just say that Calipari was a great recruiter? That’s all Goodman said. Not coach. Recruiter. As for ALWAYS being regarded as the runner up…Selby #1, Knight #6.
And it’s a good thing you went to bed, because you’re post doesn’t make sense. I’m not one to normally point out spelling errors, but you’re missing whole words that change the entire meaning of the sentence! Take a look (hopefully in the morning when you can make sense out of it):
“First you were in the top two for Jones–that was Washington and Kentucky”
Ok, if we were in the top two, shouldn’t you have listed Kansas then? You probably meant to say “you were NOT in the top two…”. I don’t necessarily agree with that either, but atleast that sentence would make sense.
“He had talked talk to Selby for over a month.”
Again, probably missing the word “NOT” here, and not “talked talk”.
I know it’s a little different from working at McDonald’s, where they have a cheeseburger button whenever you want to add a cheeseburger to the order. On keyboards, there’s not a “NOT” button, you actually have to spell it out.

“Kansas men’s basketball recruit Josh Selby is now the top prospect in Rivals.com’s Rivals 150 class of 2010 rankings.
His display in the Jordan Brand Classic was enough to set him apart from the pack.
“I just think he shows the complete package,” Shay Wildeboor from Rivals.com said. “Playing point guard, you have to do more than just score. If anyone who saw him play in that game, you saw behind-the-back, no-look passes. He’s almost unguardable. If he wants to get to the basket, he’ll get there.”
Wildeboor said Kentucky signee Brandon Knight, who previously held the top spot and is now sixth, didn’t do anything wrong. The other players have just been improving.
The top five consists of Selby, Harrison Barnes (committed to North Carolina), Enes Kanter (Kentucky), Kyrie Irving (Duke) and Jared Sullinger (Ohio State).
“If I’m starting a team, I want Josh Selby,” Wildeboor said. “But you couldn’t go wrong with Harrison Barnes either.””

Actually, I am a Memphis fan. I could not care less where TJones goes, but the fact that Cal told him that he let down a lot of fans is what grinds my gears. Makes you wonder what he tells other recruits he’s missed out on.
I agree with you on one thing, and that is Self isn’t the same recruiter as Cal. That has always been evident, but Self is a better COACH. He develops players and has kept his National Championship game appearance and Final Four appearance.
BTW, Cal doesn’t get every player he wants. I wasn’t going to do a list earlier, but here we go:
Tobias Harris-TN
Kyrie Irving-Duke
Will Barton-Memphis
Adrien Payne-Michigan State
Jelan Kendrick-Memphis
Tarik Black-Memphis
Joe Jackson-Memphis
CJ Leslie-NC State
Cal won’t/doesn’t get every player he wants. Didn’t want to do it, but you made me

CDR was highly underrated when coming out of high school, and benefited from playing in the DDMO. He didn’t add anything to his game, and I know this because I went to every home game the 3 years he played at Memphis.
I’ll give you Camby, but he was an elite talent coming out of high school from what I hear.
Agree completely with your last statement. Guys like Daniel Orton and Bledsoe will be picked on potential, not production. They’re riding the coattails of Wall, Cousins, and Patterson.
/
newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
I do appreciate the link. However, it doesn’t say that Jones called Cal.
“Once the interviews and photo-ops were completed, Jones wandered to a far corner where he spoke for several long minutes on a cellphone.
A family member said he was breaking the news to Kentucky coach John Calipari, who finished second in the recruiting battle.”
No mention there of who called whom. “he spoke” and “he was breaking the news”, doesn’t equal “He called”

LOL. Your welcome, my man. I do my best to stay unbiased because that is what my job calls of me. Just had to state the facts.

Yeah I knew CDR wasn’t very highly ranked out of high school, which is why I included him. Being a Memphis fan you’d know better than I if he was underrated by recruiting services and how his game evolved (or didn’t). Anyway, Pastner looks like a rising star in the coaching ranks, so congrats. Also didn’t know if you saw that KU was playing Memphis next year in the Jimmy V Classic. Hope for another good game, you guys nearly had us last year.
/
tsmooth / May 1, 2010
Yep, sure did see that. First game of the Jimmy V Classic. December 7th, I think.
Pastner will get his extension soon. If not over the summer, then he will next spring. I’m hearing R.C. Johnson is waiting to see what Pastner does this season, and is trying to add some clauses to Pastner’s current contract.
Thanks for the kind words about Memphis, man. I wish the best for KU, and think the game this year will be even better since the talent wil be almost on an even keel. I’ll have to cede the advantage to KU because y’all have more experience coming back. The PG battle between JJ and J. Selby should be awesome to see.
I’ll definitely be there to watch the game. You going?
/
fearthephog25 / May 1, 2010
I wish the Huskies could just have their time to shine and enjoy the time in the national spotlight. Without calimari messing it all up. Maybe cal should of thought of the consequences of pushing his players to enter their name in the NBA draft.
/
newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
add “Josh Selby – Kansas” to that list. Don’t let the UK sour grapes propaganda fool you, Cal wanted him. Also, KU got a verbal committment from sophomore Zach Peters about a week ago, who also had Kentucky wanting his services. Granted, a lot can happen with him only being a sophomore. Regardless the point is that NO coach, no matter how great of a recruiter they are, gets every player they want.
/
tsmooth / May 1, 2010
Again, I agree with your last statement.
I can tell you though that Calipari didn’t want Selby that much after he knew Knight would pledge to UK. He stopped recruiting him completely. But, UK was on his final list, so he should be added to the list.
Knew about Zach Peters, but he’s 2012, and like you said, anything can happen until he signs an official LOI.
Also, Winston Shepard and Perry Ellis both listed UK, KU, and Memphis at the Kansas Camp today. Both are 2012, and should be highly sought after players
/
newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
Ha, I wish I was going! No I don’t have the means or the opportunity to make that trip. Just have to settle for watching it on the tube.
You’re right that the Selby-Jackson match-up should be highly entertaining. I’m excited to see Barton play too, he could be a real mis-match for us if he lives up to the hype.
As with Kentucky, I don’t have anything against Memphis, only Calipari. I felt bad for you guys the way he left you. I mean, Kansas fans know about losing a coach to another elite level program, but atleast Roy didn’t take his last recruiting class with him! Granted 3 of the 4 ended up transferring anyway, but still I think that’s pretty unheard of. I’m glad that the program landed on its feet and has rebounded nicely.
/
newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
Well, “stopped recruiting” and “didn’t want” are two different things. Like I said, he made it work with Wall & Bledsoe last year, and if he was willing to sign Lamb, surely he would have taken Selby instead. I think it was atleast a case of a mutual lack of interest.
Regarding the Jayhawk invitational this weekend, yeah I’m all over that. I live in Wichita and graduated from Wichita Heights, where Ellis attends now. My parents actually are acquainted with his parents. Not claiming to have any insider information or anything, I just know he’s a great kid and comes from a great family. Got to see him play a few times this year. Really hope to see him donning the crimson & blue in a few years.

Here is probably the reason why Calipari is freaking out that he lost another recruit, check it out…

Lol too funny if it’s true!
/
BostonCat / May 1, 2010
a lot of uninformed people here. but that is not surprising. hate, bias, and agenda cloud reason. instead of being mad at calipari. ku fans should be mad at the stalker-type site theshiver for making you all believe you were in this. you werent. in a way you were used, like tenn. was used by selby to hype it all up. as far as zona fans, well no one cares about them anyways. it was down to uk and uw all along. believe it, dont believe it, doesnt matter. its what it is. and uk was the #1 choice
jones picked uk and let the coaches know. then after 30 minutes of sitting up there, last second changed his mind. probably got caught up in the moment. which is understandable and why jones is having second thoughts and why the conversation between cal and jones took place. if it was your coach who was told he was coming, he would be on the phone with him as well if he switched at the last second. dont kid yourself.
often the obvious and easiest answer is the correct one. but for some people believing in a mob mentality and conspiracy theories is better.
sounds like the kid needs more time to figure things out. he should take all the time he needs. and i wish him the best.
/
ArizonaWildcat27 / May 1, 2010
You can spin it anyway you want, but the bottom line is Calipari lost out on another recruit and he doesn’t know what to do. So he calls a kid up and puts a guilt trip on him.
As far as TJ already picking UK, where is the proof to that? You talk about conspiracy theories and what not, but you don’t provide one shred of evidence that TJ picked UK. So I ask again; where is your proof?
As far as Arizona; we were never recruiting TJ and he never had us on his radar either, I’m just a fan of basketball who can’t stand what Calipari represents.

just like when you lost out on EVERY recruit you wanted, you came up with reasons and still claim your team will be fine next year with a returning cast of NIT kids if that.
/
BostonCat / May 1, 2010
spin it any way you want, zona is irrelevant and bashing cal wont make you feel better. TJ was never recruited by zona because zona doesnt have a chance with elite players.
i dont need to present proof, i listen to people who know what goes on and not wannabe blog websites who stalk recruits looking for a quote.
jones isnt lost yet and if he were it wouldnt matter. 9 5 star players in a year and a flood more on the way. losing jones would just be a bump in the road in the bigger picture of things.
/
newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
Well, I’d say everyone is “uninformed.” KY fans just KNEW he was picking UK yesterday. They had heard all these rumors of a “soft verbal”, that that was the reason Leslie spurred KY, etc. This is the applicable thing from the link to the Seattle Times blog provided above:
“Still, I suspect this situation is extremely rare. Anyone who says they knew for certain what Jones was going to do isn’t being honest. His parents didn’t know, which says all you need to know about him and is ability to keep a secret.”
So your statement “believe it, dont believe it, doesnt matter. its what it is. and uk was the #1 choice” is pretty much you being dishonest.
/
ArizonaWildcat27 / May 1, 2010
Lol you guys are funny! Yes, Arizona has been relevant since our 2005 Elite 8 debacle with Illinois, I know this.
It’s kind of hard replacing a Hall of Fame coach who in his last couple years of coaching started having physical and mental issues, but we will be back.
And correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Kentucky in the NIT last year? You guys haven’t been relevant for YEARS until last year as well.
As far as losing out on recruits; its all good as long as Miller can put together a winning team and he is a great young coach who has MORALS and integrity. I would rather have that any day of the week than have someone like Calipari leading my team.
If you are looking for just short term success than a bunch of sanctions, than you have the right coach. I would rather have a coach who will stick around for many years and will have long term success.
/
ArizonaWildcat27 / May 1, 2010
Oh and by the way; TJ will more than likely sign his LOI at breakfast with Romar this morning.
Like I said; he isn’t leaving the Pac10!
/
bigpapijugg / May 1, 2010
well if he meets with romar, UW will be under NCAA probation. a recruit isnt allowed to meet the coach during this period unless he is on an official visit. the problem is HE DIDNT PUT TOGETHER A WINNING TEAM, he should have stayed at X.
and it might sound funny but id rather have cal making elite eights and sweet sixteens than not making the tourney and being irrelevant like gillispie. the funny part is UA would have been in our exact same position right now had billy gillie not got fired. Cal would have prolly went to UA. you would be the one taking up for him.

newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
bigpapajugg wrote “THERE WAS NO GUILT TRIP. AND CAL DIDNT CALL HIM. READ THE FRIGGIN LINK”
OK, here’s what the link said regarding the matter:
“I erred in the previous post when I wrote Calipari called Jones. I don’t know who called whom. I know Jones was on the cellphone for a long time and a Jones family member told me he was talking to Calipari.”
So Cal might have called Jones. Jones might have called Cal. We don’t know. Maybe that’s how you should characterize your all-caps rant, as opposed to stating that Cal didn’t cal Jones as fact.
As for the guilt trip, I will concede that it least in terms of the “you hurt thousands of people” comment, that was not out of Cal’s mouth. The link cleared that up. We don’t know what prompted that comment, still could have been Cal laying on a guilt trip during their conversation, but at least for now I will rescind my criticism of Cal on that matter.

ArizonaWildcat27 / May 1, 2010
How would he be under NCAA probation? TJ verbally committed in public to the Washington Huskies. How is that in anyway a violation?

You made it sound like, “I really don’t hate UK,” of course, that being right after you said, “UK fans are hypocritical, and low lifes.” Percise wording, no, general idea equivalent, yes. After further explanation, your context is more acceptable, but given only that post, the general idea and theme is contradictory.

Now you are getting UK fans confused and continue to assume that was the only problem. Infact, I thought Michael, out of his pure hatred for UK was pulling that out of his butt, only to demonize Cal. Then on the Seattle times, I found the thing that truely bothered me, about Cal’s statement to Jones, which turned out to be misleading. In all honesty, I really don’t care that he might go after an already committed player, so that’s not an issue with me, even if he did. So, in the end, what I am saying, is that I don’t care who called whom OR what was said over the phone. Please stop projecting a statement I already said to ignore, onto the other UK fans. Thanks for your cooperation.

You Arizona Fans kill me…I don’t know why you are even on a Sports site. You have bigger issues to worry about. You are to concerned with who enters you state? You should be a site that is dealing with politics.
How long was Miller at his other schools??? You will keep him for a while due to him being at Arizona. When Arizona was winning that was due to the other PAC 10 teams not winning. Since some of the other schools have some better coaches Arizona has slipped and will continue to be a NIT team.
You had a coach that had mental and Physical setbacks. We had a coach who was a drunk and abuser and we replaced him and one right away. Why was that? We are the University of Kentucky. Big Blue Nation rules!
I will be looking for a political blog site for you Arizona fans to chat on. Stay tune.

LOL. Diabolic, I hope he’s wearing blue and gray in 2012!! But seriously, when a coach and player stop communicating, it is evident that both sides have moved on. Last fall, Calipari definitely wanted Selby. Hell, what college coach wouldn’t want him? But when it became known that Knight was headed to UK, Cal stopped recruiting another PG. Why? Cal’s DDMO calls for a PG and SG, not 2 PG’s. He needed a very good shooter, and got that in Lamb
/

I hope the best for TJ.

Hey rbcat,
I have a quick question for you..
If you get divorced in Kentucky, are you still considered brother and sister?
I currently live in NC and trust me I know how redneck you people are.
rbcat – “When Arizona was winning that was due to the other PAC 10 teams not winning.”
Really genius? Yeah that’s because we were kicking their asses! 11 Pac10 Championships in Lute Olson’s 25 years at Arizona. Half the time he was here he won conference championships. I Still remember the last time our teams met in the 97′ championship game, great game..for us!
Lute wasn’t replaced so quickly because unlike Gillespie, he ran the show and built our program and not to mention he was a hall of fame coach. Similar situation UCONN is in.
Only a dumbass like you would bring political issues to a sports blog.
/
tsmooth / May 1, 2010
Man, all this arrogance and cockiness stifles me.
It always appears to be a UK vs KU or KU vs AU or AU vs UK type of debate on here. Well, I’m unbiased, so here it goes:
KU was better than UK in the 2000 decade. More relevancy, lost one elite coach and plugged him back in with another. Advantage: KU.
KU vs AU…KU was the better program in the 2000 decade. Didn’t have 3 coaches in 3 years(yes, I know Lute’s issues caused that) hurts the program, and AU lost out on lots of recruits due to uncertainty at the head coaching position. Advantage: KU.
AU vs UK….As far as the last decade is concerned, it’s very close. I’m going to give it to UK because aside from the Billy G experiment, they were still a top tier program. Zona hasn’t done much since it’s epic battle vs Illinois in ’05, but has a bright future ahead with Miller. UK has a brighter picture with Calipari as of now because he is going to put together a monster 2011 class. Advantage: UK.
There you go. This is analysis from an unbiased perspective. Now you can bash me. lol.
/
ArizonaWildcat27 / May 1, 2010
I didn’t know Auburn University (AU) was in this discussion.
If you meant University of Arizona (UA, or UofA) than ok, but Auburn was never mentioned.
Whether which program over a decade was better, etc. is always going to be debatable. All I know is Arizona beat both UK and KU the last time each team met. 🙂
/
newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
Whether you said to ignore it or not, another poster brought it up again with the link. He had said he had info that Cal didn’t call Jones, I asked him to provide the link, and he did. I’m not attempting to confuse anyone…you are confused. I was not responding to you, and you’re not the board moderator, so again, whether you said to ignore it or not is irrelevant. Go project your power trip elsewhere.
/
rbcat / May 1, 2010
ArizonaWildcat27—That explains it all…You living in the hills of NC under the light blue mist of the Carolina’s…I would suggest getting the hell out of that state. Want to talk about rednecks—have you left your house. Look around at your neighbors, brother.
Yes, Arizona did beat KY–congrats. We were in our 2nd championship game in a row. Not an easy thing to do. We are talking about one game. UK has over 2000 wins—7 national titles. We bring 24,000 fans to the first practice of every year. Arizona could not even get 24,000 fans to one game if they had the chance.
We can debate all we want, but this is not politics—it’s sports and the number don’t lie…Big Blue Nation Rules… UK has the Greatest Tradition in College Basketball. Go debate the laws being passed in Arizona. You might have a better chance of winning that debate.
/
newdiabolic316 / May 1, 2010
Well, you’re right it wasn’t PRECISE wording. I said Cal was a low-life, not UK fans. I do think that UK fans are acting a little hypocritical. I’ll willingly admit that I’m not all that familiar with CJ Leslie, but know that fans (not all, but some) called him a head case. Well what about Jones? Don’t wait until he signs a LOI to call him out. Here’s my big problem with Jones’ actions. Any school would be frustrated with his act had he chosen them and then seemingly continued to ponder his recruitment. If he still had doubts, he should have said so at the presser and taken his time. However, to organize a press conference with almost 25,000 people watching online, complete with the “drama” of all of the hats lined out on the table, and then to tell the sports world he is going to Washington…that should really be the end of it. It’s not as if anything changed in the minutes following his announcement. There was no other news that changed the college basketball landscape that would justify reconsidering his choice. No coaching change. No early entry into the NBA draft opening up playing time somewhere. Nothing. All the information was there. He made a choice. I hope he sticks with it.
Again, all fans are like this. It’s a “what can you do for us” world of college basketball. KU recruits guys and then misses on them, and all of a sudden they have nothing good to say about the kid. Apologies if my original post on hypocrisy didn’t adequately explain my position.
/
ArizonaWildcat27 / May 1, 2010
“Arizona could not even get 24,000 fans to one game if they had the chance”
You are right considering our basketball arena (McKale) can only hold 14,500 people in it. Like you, we pack the house. You couldn’t buy tickets if you wanted too because we were always sold out months in advance and season ticket holders would never give up their tickets.
The last two years since Lute retired we have died down just a little bit. By a little bit I mean we averaged 14,000 fans out of 14,500 seats this year and we only had 5 sellouts. By far and away the most attendance and support of ANY Pac10 team.
No one is arguing your tradition. I have nothing against Kentucky. You are the second greatest program in the nation, second only to UCLA. What I can’t stand is your sleazeball coach and his lack of morals and integrity! That’s what I have been debating this whole time, not your program.

“I just read that an article from his hometown that said he called Coach Cal. So does that sill put Calipari as the worst person in College Basketball”
This was my response to him saying he’d read an article:
“Also, as blasphemy asked someone earlier…provide the link. If you have a report supporting your claim that Jones called Calipari, provide it. Then, if it is true I may reconsider.”
All I was saying was that I wanted a link, as you had also asked somebody to provide a link earlier to support some information they said they had found. I have to agree that Cousins no doubt had the talent to be a lottery pick. No argument, but I do disagree with the assessment that he would have gone in the lottery. First round, yes, lottery, no. I remember, vaguely just to be clear, something about NBA scouts not knowing what they could expect out of Cousins at the next level just a few games into the season. Though I can’t remember where or (precisely) when I heard/read this. We may just have to agree to disagree.

I read the same thing. I believe it was on DraftExpress. It was about him being a head case and that sometimes he mails it in. He certainly learned to use his big body more late in the season and gave more of himself, but from watching his game against UNC or Ohio compared to his game versus WVU or Cornell, he didn’t evolve as a player; he evolved as a person, and his attitude got better.

This was a second post to the one you posted earlier. I thought you were continuing. Perhaps being clear the first time and not continually making mistakes would help this.
Perhaps learning what projection really means would help this cause aswell. You don’t “project” a power trip, you “have” a power trip. Projection means you essentially, put somebody’s feelings onto another person and believe they are experiencing them. Most projections only happen with people from themselves onto others. Infact, a better word than “projecting” would have been “profiling.” But at least its a better use of the word.
Also, though you used power trip in the correct way when you said it, you are taking things out of context. How very Borderline of you.

How still very Borderline of you. Let’s see, you are between denial and anger right now. Just let the stages of grief run their course, else you may find yourself stuck in limbo. You see, with borderline disorder, you take things out of context, which you have displayed time and time again.
Example: “if you are going to analyze every little word of my posts, at least make sure yours are spelled correctly.”
Now, what’s interesting, is that I was hardly “Micro-managing” your post. Knowing the definition of something, two things actually, can completely change the context of your paragraph, as it did. Somehow though, you still believe I am “nit-picking,” as it were, but is hardly the logical case. Perhaps a year or two in college would enlighten you as to the primary point of an English class. THE MAIN IDEA. Once again, it’s not a “fail” on my part, it’s a “fail” on yours. Perhaps a logic class would be a good way to earn an F but still pick up a few life skills?
