SYRACUSE — Hofstra coach Tom Pecora is the new coach at Fordham and will be introduced at a press conference set for 1 p.m. Thursday.

“It’s done, he took the job,” a Hofstra source said, adding that it was a five-year deal. Terms were unclear, but Fordham said the annual salary was less than the $705,000 figure that has been reported.

Pecora met Wednesday with Fordham officials at an off-campus location and a deal was struck. He was not immediately available for comment.

Hofstra will hold its annual men’s basketball reception Wednesday night, and Pecora will inform the Pride players then.

“Pecora brings instant credibility to Fordham,” said Kimani Young, athletic director of the influential New Heights AAU program. “He knows the landscape of New York City basketball and will bring a wealth of knowledge and recruiting relationships to the table. I believe he will build a competitive team in two years.”

NEW YORK — If Knicks president Donnie Walsh doesn’t get LeBron and Dwyane Wade this summer, he could sign one such megastar and wait for Carmelo Anthony next year.

“It depends what we can get this summer,” Walsh said Tuesday night before Danilo Gallinari and the Knicks topped ‘Melo and the Nuggets, 109-104, at MSG. “Let’s say we can’t get everybody we want [this summer], then we’ll look at it another way.”

The Knicks have freed up more than $30 million in salary-cap space and could pursue two max-contract free agents this summer from a group that includes James, Wade, Chris Bosh and Joe Johnson.

Brandon Knight added a major award, but lost a school on Tuesday.

Knight, the 6-3 guard out of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Pine Crest ranked the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2010, became just the third player to win back-to-back Gatorade National Player of the Year awards. Former NBA star Alonzo Mourning presented Knight with the honor. Mourning won the honor in 1998.

LeBron James and Greg Oden were the other two players to win the honor in back-to-back years.

“It’s a great honor to be in this category,” Knight said, according to RivalsHigh. “It adds a little pressure, but that’s what makes a lot of great athletes, that they are able to thrive under pressure.”

Enes Kanter’s coach at Stoneridge (Calif.) Prep confirmed a report by Scout.com that the 6-9 Turkish big man had made a verbal commitment to Kentucky.

“He did it,” Tank Thornton wrote in a text.

Kanter added on his Facebook status according to BoxofMess.com: “(UK) THE BIG BLUE !!!

The news was first reported by Scout.com.

Kanter initially committed to Washington but then changed his mind last month.

Kanter is now at his third high school this year. Findlay (Nev.) Prep and Beckley (West Va.) Mountain State – and a slew of colleges — have been scared off by his professional background, which has sparked the interest of the NCAA.
