    VILLANOVA, Pa. — Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez opted to bench star shooting guard Jeremy Hazell for the last 4:o4 of Tuesday’s 81-71 loss to No. 2 Villanova after Hazell had put up a game-high 32 points on 12-for-23 shooting.

    After Scottie Reynolds hit a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach at 76-66, Hazell missed a jumper and Gonzo pulled him. He never went back in.

    “It’s not the way you want to play college basketball,” Gonzo said. “I wouldn’t be doing a good job of teaching him, I’m not helping him. So basically I took him out and I told him ‘Jeremy you can  go 1-on-1 and you can be forceful, press and look for some shots but you can’t just come down every time and take bad double-clutch shots.’

    Rice coach Maurice Hicks can hardly keep track of the revolving door of high-major coaches flocking to see 6-foot-9 senior big man Kadeem Jack.

    After Jack returned Friday night from an official trip to Arizona, he proceeded to lead Rice to the title at the 3rd annual SNY Invitational with back-to-back wins over Boys & Girls and Cardozo at LIU-Brooklyn.

    Over the two games, Miami assistant Jorge Fernandez, Seton Hall assistant Scott Adubato, St. John’s assistant Fred Quartlebaum and Providence assistant Rodell  Davis were all on hand to watch Jack.

    “I tell the coaches now that every day a new big-time coach is calling for him,” Hicks said. “And I tell them that his upside is great.”

    The New York metropolitan area will be well represented in this year’s McDonald’s All-American Game.

    Four players from New York and New Jersey will play in the prestigious game March 31 in Columbus, Ohio.

    Duke-bound guard Kyrie Irving of Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick; Tennessee-bound forward Tobias Harris of Dix Hills (N.Y.) Half Hollow Hills West; Villanova-bound JayVaughn Pinkston of Brookyn Bishop Loughlin; and uncommitted guard and Queens, N.Y. native Doron Lamb of Oak Hill Academy have all been invited. Harris, on left, and Pinkston are pictured at left during their recent battle at the Big Apple Invitational.

    Tristan Thompson, a forward who has signed with Texas and plays at Findlay (Nev.) Prep, was also selected. Thompson previously played at Newark (N.J.) St. Benedict’s Prep.

    The official list won’t be released until Feb. 11 on ESPNU.
