NEW YORK — If a New York-area Big East or other college team is looking for a coach next year, they might want to consider Chris Mullin or Bill Wennington.
Several New York-area jobs could come open this spring, including St. John’s, Rutgers, Fordham and Fairleigh Dickinson.
The two former St. John’s stars both are both keeping their options open going forward.
“I guess if it was the right situation, I would entertain the idea” of coaching college, said Wennington, now a radio color commentator for the Bulls.
Both former players were on hand Thursday at Madison Square Garden to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of St. John’s 1985 run to the Final Four. St. John’s is set to play Louisville at 7 p.m.
Mullin, the star of the ’85 team and a former Executive VP of Basketball Operations with the Warriors, said he was keeping his options open.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do right now,” he said. “A lot of basketball jobs are intertwined to a degree, college being a bit different. I’m just taking time off right now. I’m just enjoying kind of de-stressing.”
CALHOUN RETURNS TO UCONN
UConn coach Jim Calhoun is back at work.
Calhoun returned to his office Thursday morning and was to lead practice Thursday afternoon. The Huskies host Cincinnati Saturday.
“I am excited to return to the team and my coaching staff,” said Calhoun. “I appreciate the hard work by the staff and team in my absence and am looking forward to being back on the court for practice this afternoon and moving forward. I am especially thankful to people for their support during the past three weeks, but also for the respect and privacy that everyone has provided me during this time. Dr. Schulman, my primary care physician, and I both felt that the time away was important for my personal and professional well-being and that I am ready to move ahead from this point at full speed.”
Calhoun went on a temporary medical leave on January 19. He missed seven games during that time, during which the Huskies went 3-4.
