Rutgers Appears OK Without Echenique

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — With injured center Greg Echenique watching the game on the computer from his girlfriend’s apartment on Tuesday night, Rutgers gutted out a tough 80-70 overtime win against Rider at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

Echenique has been told by his surgeon not to touch a basketball for at least eight weeks after undergoing successful surgery Wednesday for a retinal detachment. Rutgers expects to go without him at least until mid-February.

“The surgery was very successful. We’ve been monitoring it with the doctors and right now there’s no timeline,” Rutgers coach Fred Hill said. “He’ll continue to get monitored and when he’s 100 percent fully healed and cleared to play, that’s when we’ll start to talk about getting him back, so we’re just very pleased that the surgery was very, very successful.”
