Seton Hall, Rutgers Each Sign One

With the NCAA early signing period for basketball now a couple of days old, Seton Hall and Rutgers both announced the signings of players from the Class of 2010.

Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez announced that Fuquan Edwin of Paterson, N.J., has signed a National Letter of Intent with the program.

The 6-foot-6, 205-pound small forward will join Seton Hall sophomore point guard Jordan Theodore as the second Paterson Catholic alum coached under PC coach Damon Wright.  Edwin is currently starting for the Cougars in his senior year.

“We are very excited about the signing of Fuquan Edwin,” Gonzalez said.  “He’s a very talented, multi-position player that will fit perfectly.  I think he’s going to have an excellent senior season and will be one of the top four or five players in the state of New Jersey.  Every time we see him, he gets better and better.  We love the fact that he can get out on the wing and just score the basketball in a variety of ways.  Fuquan is coming off a tremendous summer and we think he’s going to be a real steal for us to add him to our family for 2010-11.”

As a junior, Edwin averaged 16 points and eight rebounds a game in helping Paterson Catholic to a second consecutive Passaic County Championship.  A second-team All-State and All-County selection, he is the No. 77-ranked prospect in the Hoop Scoop’s Top-100.  ESPN ranks him as the 23rd best small forward.

Rutgers announced that 6-3, 195-pound guard Austin Carroll of Bedford, Mass., has signed with the Scarlet Knights. An NBA Players Association Top 100 camp participant and Bob Gibbons All-Tournament of Champions choice, Carroll is currently a post-graduate student at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H.

“Austin has been raised on the sport of basketball and will be a tremendous addition to our program,” said Hill. “He definitely meets the definition of student-athlete, as he excels both on the court and in the classroom. Austin has impressive range on his jumper and excels as a spot up shooter. He is the type of player who makes those around him better.”

A three-time New England Top 75 Showcase selection, Carroll is a 2009 graduate of Worcester (Mass.) Academy, where he served as team captain as a senior. He was also An All-New England Preparatory School Council selection and McDonald’s All-America nominee for the Hilltoppers. A strong student, he was recognized on the honor roll in each of his semesters at Worcester.

Carroll is the son of former Boston Celtics (2004) and Duquesne University (1989-95) head coach John Carroll, who also served as an assistant coach for seven years at Seton Hall under P.J. Carlesimo.
