Seton Hall just held a conference call with Bobby Gonzalez to announce his three-year contract extension, and as usual there were some interesting comments about various members of the media and his goals and plans for recruiting and the long term.

The call began 20 minutes after it was supposed to because Gonzo said he had to discipline a player for missing class this morning.

“Anytime a guy misses class, we make him run,” Gonzalez said.

Here are some specific quotes:

ON SECURITY IN RECRUITING

“Very, very excited to have this announcement made, especially right before the season. I just think it makes a statement about our hard work of our kids, our coaches and our program.

“When I started we were picked 15th in the league, We’ve built it to the point where we’re being talked about in competition with the upper-echelon teams in the league…those things are all potential and we haven’t done it yet, but the fact that those things are being discussed means we’re heading in the right direction.”

The Big East released its hoop schedule today and here’s the official release.

The league also announced its schedule of non-conference games which will be televised on national networks.  At least 27 games will receive national exposure.

Forty-four conference contests will be carried on ESPN or ESPN2.  ESPNU, which has increased its reach to over 47 million homes, will carry approximately 20 league games.  CBS Sports will televise 11 more games involving BIG EAST teams.  ESPN will continue to televise The BIG EAST Championship from Madison Square Garden in New York.  The dates for the 2010 event are March 9-13.

In total, 69 of the 144 regular-season BIG EAST games (or 48 percent) will likely be on national television.  The remaining games will be carried on ESPN360 or ESPN Regional/BIG EAST Network.  When The BIG EAST Championship games are added, more than half of all games played between BIG EAST teams will be televised nationally.

The NCAA contact period began Wednesday and runs through Oct. 5, meaning college basketball coaches are on the move all over the nation courting some of the country’s top ballers. Here are some snippets and highlights of what’s going on:

**First off, Frantz Massenat, a 2010 guard from Trenton Catholic, committed to Drexel on Wednesday. Jerian Grant, a 6-4 shooting guard from DeMatha (Md.), committed to Notre Dame.

**Kansas head coach Bill Self and his staff met with Baltimore (Md.) Lake Clifton point guard Josh Selby (pictured) and his mother, Maeshon Witherspoon, on Wednesday. Selby decommitted from Tennessee and probably won’t sign until the spring.

Seton Hall head coach Bobby Gonzalez has received a three-year contract extension through the 2014-15 season.

Gonzalez, 46, originally received a five-year contract with a rollover year added.

Financial terms of the new deal were not disclosed.

“This extension serves as a strong indicator of the University’s commitment and support for Bobby Gonzalez as head coach of our men’s basketball program,” Seton Hall AD Joe Quinlan said.  “We expect to be successful and believe that Coach Gonzalez has taken the necessary steps to position our program for future success.  He has made progress with the program in only three years and we are very pleased to have him as our head coach.”

Gonzalez has compiled a record of 47-46 through three seasons, including a 17-11 mark last season in which the Pirates went 7-11 in the Big East.
