Grothe Becomes Big East All-Time Leader

The Big East football coaches conference was today and here are some highlights.

South Florida QB Matt Grothe threw for 208 yards and two TDs, becoming the Big East’s all-time leader in total offense to help South Florida down Western Kentucky 35-13 Saturday.

The senior QB added 53 yards rushing to boost his career total yardage to 10,702, breaking former West Virginia QB Pat White’s record of 10,329.

“I think everybody has a lot of respect for Pat White and what Pat White did in all the years that he was at West Virginia. And for Matt Grothe to just pass that record, I think just says an awful lot about Matt and some of the accomplishments  that we’ve done with a young program through his career,” USF coach Jim Leavitt said.

“He means an awful lot, he’s such a great leader. And he’s competitor. No matter what the circumstances are, he’s going to go out there and compete. And he can throw and he can run pretty well, obviously. So he means a lot to us.”

BIG WEEK AHEAD

The Big East is a combined 10-3 against non-conference opponents so far, but that record will be tested over the next two weeks when the league’s teams face a combined nine BCS opponents.

This week’s games include Louisville at Kentucky (SEC); UConn at Baylor (Big 12) ; Cincinnati at Oregon State (Pac-10); Northwestern (Big Ten) at Syracuse and West Virginia at Auburn (SEC).

Cincinnati, coming off a 70-3 beatdown of Southeast MIssouri State, knows it will have its hands full at Oregon State.

“We represent the Big East, a conference that continues to build and emerge and these are opportunities out of the league that we want to win,” Bearcats coach Brian Kelly said. “I think they’re important as you continue to build the crediblity of your conference. We play these games not only to win, but also to represent our conference.”
