Federer Rolls, Venus Survives

NEW YORK — When Devin Britton first heard last Thursday that his first-round match at the U.S. Open would be against five-time defending champion Roger Federer, he couldn’t quite wrap his mind around it.

“I didn’t really believe it at first. I thought it was just a bad joke,” Britton said. “And then I started getting texts on my phone and realized it’s true. I was excited at first and then…just a little bummed. It’s a tough opponent,” Britton recalled after Federer, the top seed, dispatched him 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 in 1 hour, 28 minutes.

Britton is an 18-year-old who just a few months ago was a college freshman at the University of Mississippi.
