This interview with Providence Coach Keno Davis at the Reebok All-American Camp is the fourth in a series of interviews with Division 1 head coaches conducted at camps this summer.

PHILLY– Providence just missed out on being the eighth Big East team in the NCAA Tournament last year and ended up falling to Miami in the first round of the NIT.

A year later, the Friars have lost eight seniors to graduation and return only five players from last year’s team.

“I think we’re going to have a very talented team next year,” Providence coach Keno Davis said last month.

J.J. Moore is on the move.

The 6-foot-5 senior wing from Long Island visited Providence last week and will hit Pittsburgh on Tuesday and potentially St. John’s on Thursday.

“I think J.J. was really impressed with the new coach [at Providence, Keno Davis] and what they’re trying to build over there and he’s also impressed with the financial investment that the school and community has invested into making the program top notch,” said Hunt Bresky, Moore’s advisor who is making the trips with him.

“He was really pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. He wasn’t as familiar with Providence as some of the other programs.”

Opening Statement

Thanks for coming out. I know it’s not the old days, since we have been meeting every day after practice, but it is a good opportunity to get with some of the kids if you have anything you want to talk to them about, assistant coaches. So far, I am encouraged by what I see. I think we have a group of guys that are incredibly committed to what we are asking them to do. That gives you a chance, nothing more, but it does give you a chance. If we can keep them healthy, and we can keep getting better, then we will have a chance to win some games. But those are big ifs. I do like the team that is coming together right now. Five practices in, I think I see things that if we continue to get better at, we are going to be pretty good.

Not too many players in the history of college basketball can say they’ve had four coaches in four years.

But Nic Wise can.

“It’s nothing I signed up for but everything happens for a reason and I feel it’s benefited me in the long run,” Wise, Arizona’s 5-foot-10, 177-pound senior point guard, said by phone from the Chris Paul camp in North Carolina. “After I finish playing I think I want to be a coach.”

Sean Miller will be the fourth man to coach Wise during his Wildcat career, following Lute Olson, Kevin O’Neill (now at USC) and Russ Pennell.

“Seeing four different perspectives on things that work and things that don’t, I think it helps me a lot and it will benefit me even more when I’m done playing,” Wise said.

I just got off the phone with Josh Selby’s mother, Maeshon Witherspoon, and she said more than a dozen schools are involved with her son and that he won’t sign until the late signing period next spring.

Selby, the No. 2 point guard in the Class of 2010, decommitted from Tennessee and is now wide open.

“Yeah, it’s more than 12 that are showing interest and that Josh has some interest in as well,” she said.

“I’m not going to list them now because some schools are still calling at this time. And I don’t want to leave [any]body out or put them in any specific order.”

Herman Harried, Selby’s head coach at Baltimore (Md.) Lake Clifton, previously mentioned UConn, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas and Syracuse as possibilities — and Witherspoon is on record saying they will definitely consider Kentucky.
