PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Tom Savage made his first pass as a Rutgers quarterback at shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday, a perfect spiral crossfield to wideout Marcus Cooper during warmups.

One day fans may look back at this as the official beginning of the Savage Era at Rutgers, but on this 100-degree day Savage was just one of five QBs in a green jersey using blue Stay Cool towels to battle the oppressive heat.

“I walked out there. It was real hot. I couldn’t even breathe, so I was like, ‘It’s going to be a rough one,'” said Savage, out of Springfield (PA) Cardinal O’Hara.

Duke, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, Kyrie Irving, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, Texas A&M, UConn, Virginia

Kyrie Irving has two schools in mind for official visits.

“Duke and Indiana are definite officials I’m gonna see,” Irving said Tuesday by text.

Irving first made the comments to Dave Telep of Scout.

Irving has said he plans to take all five officials, meaning three would be left for the group that includes Kentucky, Georgia Tech, UConn, Notre Dame, Virginia, Texas A&M and Seton Hall.

The 6-foot-1 Irving just returned from Oregon, where he was named MVP of the Nike Global Challenge. He averaged 21.3 points and 4.3 assists at the event

“I was down in Orlando with him and he’s really taken it to another level since then,” said St. Patrick assistant coach Rae Miller.

Irving is taking a much needed day off from hoops on Tuesday, seeing a Broadway show in Manhattan, according to his Twitter feed.

Enjoyed a tremendous New York City night last night…Made it back from Rutgers football practice — where I wrote this story on the RU quarterback competition — in time to meet my wife and go for a roller blade in Central Park on a nice summer night. Then we grabbed a quick slice of pizza and made it over to the Beacon Theatre on 74th St. to see Steely Dan live. The Beacon is the best and most beautiful venue in NYC to see a show and I was really looking forward to Steely Dan.

Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, Tennessee

Joe Jackson has cut his list to three schools and hometown favorite Memphis is still the leader.

The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Jackson told Jerry Meyer of Rivals that he will attend either Kansas, Memphis or Tennessee and that he will sign in November.

A senior at Memphis White Station, Jackson has been the primary object of desire for new Memphis head coach Josh Pastner, who hopes that Jackson might become a smaller version of Penny Hardaway.

“Memphis is the frontrunner,” Eric Robinson, Jackson’s AAU coach, told me Monday. “They are the  hometown powerhouse program in his home city.”

Kentucky was intially recruiting Jackson, but reportedly did not offer him a scholarship.

Baylor, Florida, Georgetown, Indiana, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Villanova

Philadelphia junior Rakeem Christmas, the No. 6 prospect in the Class of 2011 and considered the top defensive player in the class, has cut his list to eight schools.

The universities that make up this list include: Baylor, Florida, Georgetown, Indiana, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas and Villanova.

“I appreciate the interest that many coaches have in me but these are the schools that my family and I think would be a good fit for me” the 6-foot-9 Christmas, out of Philly Northeast Catholic, said in a statement.
