The 18 year draught between FIBA U19 World Championships is over for the United States men.

Behind 18 points from Tyshawn Taylor , the former St. Anthony of Jersey City star who is now at Kansas, and another balanced scoring effort that featured seven players contributing eight or more points, the USA fended off a determined Greek team to post an 88-80 victory Sunday night in the FIBA World Championship gold medal game in Auckland, New Zealand.

“It feels good,” Taylor said. “We put in a lot of hard work. We’ve been together for like three weeks, three-and-a-half weeks now and going real hard. We had two a days back in Colorado at training camp so we’ve been going real hard and all that hard work paid off so everybody is excited and happy.

NEPTUNE, N.J. –– After spending two days in Philly at the Reebok All-American Camp, I drove back to Manhattan Friday night in time to take my daughter Gracie out for ice cream and sleep in my own bed. Took the kids to the playground this morning, had Vietnamese lunch with the family and then braved the Jersey Shore traffic down to the Hoop Group Summer Classic. Here’s a quick notebook:

Coaches from about a dozen high-majors watched the 6-foot-1 senior combo guard from Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick drop 24 points as the New Jersey Roadrunners pulled out a one-point win over Philly Pride.

Cincinnati, Lance Stephenson

Lance Stephenson has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in the groping case of a 17-year-old Lincoln High girl, according to the New York Daily News.

He agreed to three days of community service and to seek counseling.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Stephenson recently signed a financial aid deal with the University of Cincinnati.

He was to head to court on Wednesday but his lawyer struck a deal that will keep him out of jail. He was facing up to six months on a misdemeanor sexual assault charge.

NBA, Villanova

PHILLY — Jordan Crawford’s dunk on LeBron James earlier this week in Akron, Ohio was so loud, folks are still talking about it here at the Reebok All-American Camp.

‘It was fresh, it was kind of crazy,” said Villanova-bound big man Markus Kennedy, who attended the LeBron James Nike Skills Camp and says he may attend the Winchendon (Mass.) School next year before college.

How did it look?

“[Crawford went] down the lane, right up on him,” Kennedy said.

Another person here who saw it said Crawford flushed with both hands, driving LeBron backward.

Grassroots, Providence, UConn

Ron Giplaye, a 6-6, 215-pound power forward from Notre Dame Prep, has verbally committed to Providence.

“Yeah, the reason I picked Providence is I like their system,” Giplaye said by phone. “I like the way they play up and down.”

Giplaye will join BABC teammate Gerard Coleman, who previously picked the Friars.

“I thought it would be good that we both played together in college,” Giplaye said.

He mentioned that he also had looks from URI, Arizona, George Washington, Delaware.

“UConn was ready to pull the trigger,” said BABC coach Chris Driscoll. “Not too many people saw him because he was hurt when his school was in a couple big tournaments.
