Kyrie Irving dropped a game-high 37 points  and Kevin Boyle Jr. had 26 of his 28 in the second half as the New Jersey Celtics downed Team Final 87-84 in OT in the Gold Pool of the 17U Super Showcase in Orlando Fla.

Irving, a 6-2 point guard being recruited by Duke, Kentucky, Indiana, Georgia Tech, Seton Hall, UConn, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and others, was 20-of-20 from the stripe, according to Alex Schwartz of Northstar Basketball, who is doing a tremendous job Tweeting from Orlando.

Irving hit two free throws with 13.6 seconds for the game’s final points.

This interview with Kansas Coach Bill Self at the Reebok All-American Camp is the first in a series of interviews with Division 1 head coaches conducted at camps this summer.

PHILLY – Bill Self knows the 2009-10 version of the Kansas Jayhawks can contend for their second national championship in three years, but the coach isn’t about to make that boast to the world.

Still, the Jayhawks are the consensus preseason No. 1 pick entering next year’s college basketball campaign.

Kansas scored two huge coups after last season when 5-11 point guard Sherron Collins and 6-11 center Cole Aldrich both opted to spend another year on campus instead of playing professionally. Both players were first-team All-Big 12 picks.

Collins led the Jayhawks in scoring at 18.9 points per game to go with 5.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds last year en route to being named a third-team AP All-American selection.

I just spoke with St. Benedict’s Prep assistant coach Scott Smith for a story on Kyle Anderson that should be up later today.

Smith is the American guardian for Gregory Echenique, the 6-foot-9 rising sophomore forward at Rutgers and he said Echenique is headed to Las Vegas to work out with famed trainer Joe Abunassar of Impact Basketball.

“He’s going there for two days and coming back Sunday,” Smith said

Smith said Echenique, a native of Venezuela, has lost about 20 pounds and is “down to 265. Hopefully he’ll be 260.”

UConn coach Jim Calhoun knows that the Kemba Walker Era in Storrs won’t last forever.

Walker, the former Manhattan Rice star, averaged 8.9 points and 3.5 assists as a frosh on a team that made the Final Four.

If he has a big year this season paired in the backcourt with Jerome Dyson, it’s possible that Walker could go to the NBA after his sophomore season.

That is why Calhoun is in Las Vegas scouting a couple of high-profile point guards in Joe Jackson and Josh Selby, who recently de-committed from Tennessee while UT coach Bruce Pearl was in Israel coaching Team USA in the Maccabiah Games. UConn is also involved
