Duke guard Elliot Williams is leaving after one season because of family medical reasons.
He is expected to file an appeal for a waiver of the NCAA’s year in residence transfer rule that would require him to sit out the 2009-10 season. Williams is seeking to transfer closer to his hometown of Memphis, Tenn., to be near his family.
He initially chose Duke over Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Memphis.
Mike Rosario and Jio Fontan leave for New Zealand on Wednesday for the FIBA U19 World Championship slated for July 2-12.
And don’t be surprised if they sleep with a basketball once they get there.
You see, the duo — who are playing for Puerto Rico in the event — slept with a FIBA basketball during training in Puerto Rico in order to get used to the smaller, lighter international ball.
“We both started to sleep with them at night,” Fontan, who played last year at Fordham, said by phone from Puerto Rico. “We slept with it for a week and we didn’t even use it. And then we used a different ball.”
As I reported last week, Memphis may be the last major option for Lance Stephenson. And even Memphis head coach Josh Pastner hasn’t heard much lately from Lance Sr.
Andy Katz is reporting that a source close to the Florida International program says they are no longer recruiting the 6-foot-5 Stephenson.
Actually, I reported this more than a month ago when I quoted Latavious Williams saying he had spoken to Isiah Thomas, who said they were out.
For those keeping track at home, the following schools have let it be known that they’re out: Florida, Florida International, Kansas, Maryland and St. John’s.
Arizona coach Sean Miller has made it clear that he’s probably not interested, but I’m not completely willing to shut the door on Arizona yet.
