Joe Paterno and the other Big Ten coaches may want the Rutgers football team to join their conference, but Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese isn’t overly worried about it.
“[Paterno] is entitled to his option. That’s what I took it to be, his opinion,” Tranghese said Monday by phone. “There’s been no comment on expansion from the Big Ten.”
Paterno, the 82-year-old dean of Big Ten coaches, made news recently when he said the conference needed a 12th team to level the playing field in college football. Penn State was the last team to join the conference 19 years ago, leaving the Big Ten in the odd position of having 11 teams.
In other Rutgers football news, five incoming players will compete Sunday at Rutgers Stadium in the New Jersey-Northeast All-Star Classic: LB Mike Larrow, CB Ryan Logan, TE Malcolm Bush, LB Ka’lial Glaud and WR Quron Pratt.
