New day, new story on Lance Stephenson.
The news today is that Lance Stephenson Sr. told USA Today that his son had narrowed his choices to Arizona and Maryland.
“He wants to clear his name before he makes a decision,” the father told the paper.
Stephenson has been charged with sexual assault and the case was adjourned to June 29.
Stephenson’s lawyer, Alberto Ebanks, said he is trying to get the case dismissed, but there is no new news on that front.
A source at Arizona said the Wildcats were trying to get Stephenson out for an official visit.
Memphis is still trying to remain involved with Stephenson and Latavious Williams told me yesterday that if he ends up at Memphis, he would like Stephenson to join him.
Another source told me the other day that Lance told one coach he would announce between Maryland and Memphis.
So there you have it.
If the case is resolved soon, a college decision could be forthcoming shortly thereafter.
If the case drags out over the summer, a college choice could also.
“He’s going to continue to work out and take care of his schooling,” Lance Sr. told USA Today.

So it looks like Maryland… Probably his best choice given the options. Kid wants to be on TV, can’t blame him for that.

“So it looks like Maryland… Probably his best choice given the options. Kid wants to be on TV, can’t blame him for that.”
If the kid wants to be an NBA allstar, he’d go to Arizona. Once he get’s to the NBA, there are countless NBA players who would take him under their wings. (Bibby, Igoudala, Jefferson, Bayless, Jason Terry, Gilbert Arenas, and others).

So after all the times you have said Maryland is definitely out according to sources close to Lance. Now you come out with a story where the closest source to him, his father says Maryland is still in the picture. This further proves you are terrible at reporting because of your major bias.
/
Hobo Terminator / May 21, 2009
Big Ben,
How does this make it seem that he’s going to Maryland? There is one source that said for the first time in ages that Lance was considering Maryland and so he is definitely going to Maryland. That makes loads of sense.
/
Terp4life / May 21, 2009
Wow Terminator it was his father. The young man’s number one confidant.
He didn’t say he was going just that it was his best choice and he is right but i am biased.
But to just throw it off as one source. It is a great source.

AZ,
When something smell FISHY….it i usually a bad thing.
I am referring to the mention of Maryland.
No one in the West is believing that info….
If Lance was a player ranked in the 100’s, I can see him going to Maryland.
Even U$C is better than that options….
Really….

AZ,
Every time Lance steps on the court, people are looking and evaluating his play. His father specifically.
So, WHY has the father NOT paid better attention with his legal representation.
That’s RIGHT. Lets talk abou the attorney for Lance.
Did he make a BIG mistake.
When the judge delayed the trail…..why not object to the time frame?
The attorneies need to agree on the new date.
Why not bring up the issue of ….Delays will impact Lance’s educational choices and higher learning.
With such an objection, the new court date would of been in late May/early June.
Just in time for summer school….at college.
(The NYC DA stayed quite and just smiled.)
BIG, BIG…..mistake by the attorney.
Do not expect any plea bargain until the DAY of the new court date.
It is to the NYC DA advantage to wait. They are in no hurry.
They have TIME on their side.
In my opinion, the attorney did NOT antcipate the Judge’s move.
And was caught off guard.
SCORE BOARD:
Judge: 1
Lance Attorney: 0
NYC DA: 1
(the winner is decided when the points get to 2.)

rmill, you sir are an idiot. Zags reported Maryland was definitely out when Lance was going to choose Kansas and definitely not Maryland. When Henry committed to Kansas, Lance went back to square one in his college considerations. If Zags was still reporting that Maryland was definitely out, than you’d be correct in your statement. Too bad its not true, making you look like an idiot.
/
Gohard / May 21, 2009
Wow, tough decision to make between 2 awesome schools in very competitive conferences. Though I’m a UA fan, being given the oppurtunity to possibly go up against UNC, Duke and now Wake who’s back in the spotlight twice a year on national tv maybe even three times in the conference tourney is a pretty attractive offer.
/
Gohard / May 21, 2009
Why are you calling him an idiot? Zags has said plenty of times all up until this week that Maryland was out. Every Lance post that he’s made since “Lance thinks maryland’s offense is too restrictive and st. johns is definitely out.” has been about Lance’s two choice’s being UA and Memphis and the one time that Lance got gunned down by Calipari. He(Zag) doesn’t like UMD for some odd reason and neither do any of you, apparently.
/
hlawyer / May 21, 2009
Of course, if he went to Memphis, Pastner is close with all those AZ players as well. They all seem to credit Pastner with some portion of their success and would be likely to help him out if possible. He would also have access to Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, and a number of bench players like Chris Douglas-Roberts, Joey Dorsey, Rodney Carney, etc.
Finally, at Memphis, he would have an opportunity to play (scrimmage, practice) with an actual NBA team, with whom they share an arena.

Yet Stephenson ultimately ruled out St. John’s and Maryland, according to sources”

In case you hadn’t figured it out yet, Zags only reports on what is said. That’s what reporters do. Calling him an idiot when the sources are the ones changing the story is akin to the old adage…”when you point a finger, you’ve got 3 others pointing right back at you.”
It’s funny how intense fans across the nation have become. We wait for every whisper, every statement so that we can plan our respective Alma Mater’s roster for the fall. In May, when we should be enjoying some great NBA Conference Finals games, we’re trying to figure out our team’s chances next March based on which team some kids decide to play for. Lance, Lance, and Lantz are not worried about a time frame for committing because they know they have options. I’m starting to get the sense that they get a kick out of the fan reactions every time they “narrow down” their choices.
Last thought…Sonny V mentioned in an interview that Lance was “running around” with a lot of Under Armor gear. If he were to commit to Maryland, would an NCAA probe be far behind? Not saying they’d find any fault, but we all know the NCAA stands for “Nosey Collegiate Athletic Association.”
/
USC.trojan / May 21, 2009
AZ,
The one thing which is consistent and YOU have right about is Lance’s interest in Arizona.
No question about YOU being correct, on this matter.
I also believe that YOU are right about Maryland.
They are OUT.
Lance Sr. had a visit from Gary.
And it was a good discussion about the restrictive offense.
One thing is FOR SURE….you can NOT teach an OLD DOG…new tricks.
So, the offense will stay the same.
Lance Sr. know this…OLD DOGS do NOT like to change.
I would recommend that Lance Sr. pay more attention to the legal representation.
It is OK to ask questions and challenge the strategy.
By my count…it is the End of the First Quarter….with the score:
Lance Attorney: 0
NYC DA: 20
Down by 20 already…..
How can a private attorney be WORKED by a DA attorney.
/
USC.trojan / May 21, 2009
AZ,
You have a relationship with the Lance camp…..you may want to recommend that Lance Sr. comments are not helping his son.
“He wants to clear his name before he makes a decision,” the father told the paper.
Hasn’t Lance Sr talked to their attorney.
Ask the attorney what would be the best plea bargain which they could expect.
>>After the delays, NYC DA will give Lance a plea of 8 hours of class.
Once the class is completed, the ticket will wiped clean.
So, if Lance Sr. acts like his son is guilty. by statements such as …”clear his name”.
He will not get a good plea bargain from NYC DA.
Next time same…NO Comment.

Well firstly, yeah, the fact that he’s suddenly listing Maryland again would tend to imply that something has changed in their relationship. But mainly I think he wants to be on TV and neither Arizona nor Memphis will be on TV much on the east coast.
I still think Boeheim gets involved late and we pick him up out of nowhere. He clearly doesn’t like his options and we’ve had good luck with ‘damaged goods’ in recent years. Where better to Carmelo-ize than the school Carmelo did it for?

Actually no, the only thing consistent is Maryland. Arizona has come (and according to one source left). Memphis has come (and according to the other source left). Kentucky, Kansas, FIU, St. Johns, etc have all been involved at one time or another but the only school that’s been there the whole time is Gary Williams, who needs Lance.

First off TV time does you good when you beat UNC in OT on ESPN and when you smash MSU on ESPN.
USC.Trojan is the guy who trys to say clever sayings but they never sound right and everyone thinks your an asshole. Have you seen Maryland play in recent years? Gary lets his team run wild until he needs to calm them down and control them. I mean Vasquez takes what ever shot he wants to. Is that not what Lance wants?
Also I have never heard from Lances mouth that he had eliminated Maryland once. So I always thought Maryland was in it.

Gary Williams can flat out coach, this coming from a Kansas Fan. Let us not forget that Lance’s first choice was Kansas.
The kid needs someone who has a track record of making kids into men and developing kids in the NBA superstars.
He would have gotten that at Kansas, who is out now that we have X, and he will get that with Gary, which is now back in it some how. I hope they get him, they need all the help they can get.

There are some serious dummies on this blog.
The person that said “something fishy” about MD just plain out doesn’t know what they are talking about. Gary runs the cleanest program in the country. Thats why, as you put it, they miss out on so many Baltimore Blue Chippers like Melo, Durant, Beasley, and so many others.
Sense when was the Flex Offense and full court press a restrictive game, to whoever said all that other stuff. Have you ever watched basketball?
To whoever said who cares about tv when you lose by 35…. your a retard. MD has the second longest streak of winning seasons in the NCAA’s dummy.
When did memphis last win the NCAA Title, oh, they didn’t. MD has back to back final fours and a title in the last 7 years. And ACC title.
Gary has the most upsets over ranked #1s besides MK.
Some of your bias is sooo crazy.
MD has been the one constant through this WHOLE process. Anyone but Duke or Carolina is a good thing to me, but, whatever.
Maryland has the 3rd most ACC wins behind Duke and UNC. Md is in a huge Media Market.
And as far as Arizona in the NBA vs. MD in the NBA, get real. Some of the best players of their era’s came out of MD. Len Elmore and Buck Williams are just 2.
Len Bias many people thought could have been the greatest player EVER.
Francis, Blake, Wilcox, Wizard, Dixon……
/
drautine / May 22, 2009
“When did memphis last win the NCAA Title, oh, they didn’t. MD has back to back final fours and a title in the last 7 years. And ACC title.”
So Maryland won a NC 6 years ago and was in the Final 4 that year and the year before. Do you think Lance really remembers that? He was 10 or 11 years old then. I really doubt it. Maybe you should ask, What has Maryland done in the last 4 years? And that would be 2 NCAA appearances with nothing past the final 32. Also they have 0 Conference Championships (Season or Tourney) 0 All Americans 0 All ACC 1st teamers. Memphis in the last 4 years has 4 NCAA appearances with 4 Sweet 16’s, 3 Elite 8’s, 1 Final 4, 1 NC runner up. On top of that they have 4 Conference Championships (both Season and Tourney) 6 All Americans and 2 1st round Draft picks and soon to be 3.
I dunno about you but all of that seems to give Memphis the advantage and in a more recognizable past for Lance. Just saying.

I think you need to get real. Compare your list to Bibby, Jefferson, Iguodala, Arenas Terry, Stoudamire, Dickerson (was going to have a huge career before it got cut short by injuries), Elliott, Luke Walton is as good as Wilcox and hell even Kerr has had ten times the career that Blake has had and Blake is also going to lose the job to Bayless in the near future if he doesn’t get run outta town first. This isn’t an arguement that’s even worth fighting over. Arizona is like 2nd or something over the past 25 years in sending players to the NBA and a lot of them become stars.
/
jhawk4 / May 22, 2009
im gonna have to agree with bgreer and drautine on this one. not to take anything away from maryland because it is a very good program, but arizona’s NBA program is more impressive, and memphis has had a much better run the past 4 years.
having said that i hope lance goes to maryland, they need him
Zona doesnt really need him, because sean miller will use that spot on a solid 4 year, program guy instead of a one and done.

Who coached all of those great NBA players from Arizona? Oh yeah, Lute Olsen. I think he left, though…
/
novers12 / May 22, 2009
You all are ignoring one very important fact about former success and NBA players within these programs, THEY CAME UNDER COACHES WHO ARE NO LONGER THERE!!
Every player that is being named that came from Arizona played for Lute Olsen and Memphis’ great success over the past few years came under John Calipari. Neither of these guys are there anymore, so you can’t act like these programs are in the same state they were in the past.
What has happened in the past with former players is completely moot, and Lance has to look at what is going to happen in the present or future. Both of these schools will have brand new coaches, systems, and players. Neither school will have instant success and that is to be expected.
Does Lance want to go through these growing pains when he wants to have instant success? That is the question he must answer, and only time will tell.
/
rarmacost / May 22, 2009
First of all, to say that if you go to AZ you have a better shot at the NBA couldn’t be a more bias and retarded thought. If you are good, you go to the NBA. The ACC is the most televised conference, so you get more exposure. So if anything, it’s safer.
But, all of the AZ guys, you are forgetting something, Lute Olsen is gone. Everyone you named was brought up with him.
2nd- Lance was only 12 when MD won the title. Right, but you don’t think they follow at that age? But the main thing is his father telling him things. At the McDonalds game, Lance Sr. on a tv interview said, ” there is a ton of tradition at that school. They would not be on our list if there wasn’t. Coach Williams does nothing but win and will continue to do so. They are one of the 20 programs in men’s basketball…”
so what do you think?
As far as Memphis goes, YOU ARE IN THE CONFERENCE USA! You can’t even comprehend what it takes to play in the ACC every night against all of the top recruits in the country. They wear themselves out just to get to the tourney. Calipari is gone and so is your last 3 years. ESPN called them the UNLV of this decade. You are already forgotten. You don’t think that Lance is gonna take a shot on a team with a New head coach and risk that?
Lets see where MD is in 4 years and where Memphis is. LOL. Like I said before. MD is on of 2 or 3 teams that has not had a losing season in like 20 years.
/
thayes / May 22, 2009
“You all are ignoring one very important fact about former success and NBA players within these programs, THEY CAME UNDER COACHES WHO ARE NO LONGER THERE!!”
I agree, but there is something to say about the ‘fraternity’ or ‘brotherhood’ of guys who went to the same school. IF Lance were to choose AZ, he would be taken in under the wings of numerous allstars, most notibly Gilbert Arenas, Richard Jefferson, and Andre Igoudala, not to mention the other solid NBA players.
I’m not saying LS would choose a school just for this reason, but I’m hoping he recognizes this.
/
bball purist / May 22, 2009
I’d like to point out that I hope Lance simply chooses a school where he will learn a lot no matter how many years he’s there, and begins the maturation process before he heads off into his career. Any of the schools he’s considering fits the bill. Of course, I’m biased towards UMD and its proximity to so much culture in DC, and its only 200 miles from NYC.
As a dad myself, I hope Lance’s dad will continue to contribute to his growth, and not stunt it as he matures. His dad’s comment on focusing on schoolwork right now until the court date is wise. No time to mess up the grades at this point.
On another biased note, despite some uninformed knocks on GW by people not in the know, players at UMD usually become very attached to Gary. The players respond to him, and many have been quoted as saying he’s like a father figure. Many players respond to that style of coaching because the player knows Gary’s the first in line there for them. Lance will have to decide what’s best for him. I hope it all works out for any high school player entering, whether in the NBA, Europe, whereever, as long as if it’s their dream, that they continue to love the game, because it sure is a fun game to play.
/
thayes / May 22, 2009
“MD is on of 2 or 3 teams that has not had a losing season in like 20 years.”… so is Arizona, in fact, they have made the NCAA tournament 25 straight times.
Not that it matters, just stating a fact.
/
bball purist / May 22, 2009
thayes – yes, that’s a fact. But the bottom line is there’s no right answer to all of this. Lance will be fine at any of the listed colleges he has mentioned. They’re all good schools, good programs. It’s just where he’ll feel comfortable. No big deal. Yes, I’m a little biased because I know how many returning players UMD has for next year and GW could work Lance right into his program much like he did with Steve Francis. I just want Lance to succeed because he’s an NYC kid and he has passion for the game.
I hope for Lance that he enjoys college life and winds up with some fond memories of college, as most of us on this board that experienced college have something to be thankful for from their college days.

If Lance went to UMD he could work out with Gilbert Arenas easily. The campus is about 12 miles from where the Wizards play. Wow man, congrats on winning conference USA championships. Marshall, Southern Miss, UCF, Tulane, UAB, East Carolina, Tulsa, SMU, Houston, Rice, and UTEP all really have stellar basketball programs. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT CONFERENCE USA IS TRASH AND YOU KNOW IT.
There is nothing “more recognizable” about playing in Conference USA…….their games are almost never on TV.
At Memphis, any coach who has a decent run of success is going to leave town for more money and a bigger stage. Same with the top recruits, they are going to play one year and bounce for the NBA to get paid.
The biggest difference is that Maryland got to the National Championship and won it. If Derrick Rose could have made some free throws maybe Memphis could have won it too. Instead, Memphis lost, so do me a favor the next time you are in College Park and stop by the the Comcast Center to polish Gary’s National Championship trophy.

Good stuff spankyb25.
Lance probably remembers Maryland winning the championship. Even if it wasn’t top-of-mind for him before his visit to Maryland on Jan. 31st it definitely came up in conversation then and on Gary’s in-home visits. Plus Lance saw the trophy at Comcast Center.
Besides, Lance considered schools that haven’t won a NC or done much in the past 4,5,or even 10 years. But recently Memphis has had more success than Maryland, that is a fact.

Memphis gave cali a chance after he was fired from the head coaching job of the nets. I been a Memphis fan since the Metro days before there was a C USA. Memphis took a chance on a big mouth head coach that nobody wanted. He used this program and it’s money to get what he wanted and guess what it’s not UK. Do you think for a second that Cali is going to stick around in the NCAA. He want to play for the big boy’s, big as in NBA. He was trying for years to do it at memphis but nobody would take him for the amount of money he was asking for. One because all he has done was prove that he could bet up on weak teams, the same thing he did at U MASS. So what does he do, go to UK who is in need of a coach and also just so happens to be in the SEC where he can run his big mouth on TV as much as he wants. I think Cali might bring ole UK back, he might even bring a National Championship. But i only give him 2, 3 years max before he jump ship for the NBA. BOOK IT

Thats absolutely wrong. Gary is one of the top coaches in the country, sure he is lazy the past few years on recruiting, but he takes crap talent and turns them into NCAA tourney teams when they shouldnt even make the NIT with their talet. Top talent not wanting to go to UMD? say hello to class of 2010 which could very well be a top 10 recruiting class with all the prospects listing Maryland. They already have Terrence Ross(ESPNU no.25), and Terrell Stoglin(ESPNU no.71).Also Memphis is OUT. Get it in your head, his FATHER(who knows more than anybody on whats going on)says its between Arizona, and Maryland. Tiger4Life, I give you credit, you are a damn good fan!!! You are like a Chicago Cubs fan! Go pretty far in playoffs every couple of decades yet still dont win it all, but you guys still support your team!!! You say you guys are elite but only as elite as the Cubs! Plus its funny how mad you get! Many may DEBATE whether or not AZ is an elite Program or not but everybody KNOWS memphis is NOT!!!!!

Memphis might not be what you call ELITE but we been there from day 1. We didn’t just jump in the picture like you try to assume. I don’t care what you think of the program, i don’t care if you say we don’t need to be in division 1 basketball, i don’t give a friendly f*** if you flat out hate us. But that’s my team, that’s the team i love, that’s who i cheer for. So please keep your stupid thoughts to yourself. Who cares Memphis been runner up 3 times and never cut down the nets, i still have tiger blue pride. And when it’s all said and done and we go 0-30 i still dont give a damn because im a Tiger 4 life. SO KILL YOURSELF ALREADY who are you trying to convince memphis sucks me or yourself

Before you bash MD, lets look at this decade, shall we?
Maryland- 1 National Championship; 2 Final Fours
Memphis- 1 FF
Once Memphis wins a crown, we then have a discussion about which program is superior. Until then, be quiet.
Oh yeah, and the ACC is ‘overrated.’ Laughable.

First of all, this is a blog. If you can’t handle someone else’s opinion, you need to crawl back under your rock or back your grandma’s basement.
Secondly, you must be the lowest form of human life to tell someone to go kill themselves b/c they don’t agree with your opinion, or they don’t like your college basketball team. You are truly a pathetic, dispecable human being for that comment.
Third, if it is so easy to win “only” one title, tell me, what does that say about your school? As you point out, there are teams you haven’t heard of who have one a title. Yet Memphis hasn’t; hmmm…..
Fourth, it’s not the title that makes UofA elite, it’s the players in the NBA, the 25 straight tournaments, the 20 straight 20 win seasons (which would be 22 if not for the 19 wins under K Oneill) and the four final fours.
Like someone said, you might debate whether UofA is elite, and even as an alum I admit they would be second tier elite, below UCLA, UK, KU, UNC and (maybe) Duke, and more on par with Syracuse, UConn, MSU etc. Regardless, there is no debate Memphis IS NOT ELITE.

LOL you Guys make Arizona look really good you know that. First off im tired of talking to 16 year old on the computer that are stupid. Second Michael how am i getting mad over someone opinion, did you even read what i wrote i said and i quote i dont care, that’s my team. i don’t care if Memphis is or is not elite it’s my team and the team i love. Is everybody in Arizona this stupid, this slowly…really? I mean really read what i wrote and read what you wrote………now don’t you feel real stupid. And Kill yourself is a something people been saying since 2007 whenever you say something STUPID. And you guy’s are just naming good teams that you like because Duke has more NC than KU and is a elite team. UCONN has 2 so does Florida, Cincinnati, Louisville, and North Carolina State does that make them all elite teams? I think AZcatz and Michael are the same person because no way God made two people this stupid and bias. Now Michael….KILL YOURSELF

“Is everyone in Arizona this slowly?” “This stupid and bias” “You guy’s”
Lol; way to prove your point. If you want to call someone stupid, try not to sound like a total idiot. Your spelling, grammar etc. is laughable.
Idiot, direct quote from you “Please keep your stupid thoughts to yourself.” Maybe you need to read your own post your complete idiot. This is a blog; people can share their thoughts whether you like it or not.
It’s amazing to me you are calling me stupid when your grammar and spelling is comparable to that of a 6 yr old.
And where is Memphis in that list? Just curious. Win a title since it is so easy, then talk you little bitch

I mean seriously, you calling anyone stupid is a joke. Your spelling and grammar is abyssmal. Get a life and a new team; yours is a joke.

Tiger4life, I should not have called you any names or have made any personal attacks and for that I apologize. I took offense to a few things you wrote but not the end of the world.
I will agree to disagree with you and leave it at that. Both of us should be proud of our teams and I don’t think Memphis is a joke.
Okay I am done responding to myself…
