Stephenson Situation in Flux

DETROIT – Despite a report that Lance Stephenson is considering a couple of other Big 12 schools, a source close to the family said there are “no new schools.”

Stephenson told reporters at the McDonald’s All-American Game that his final three schools were Kansas, Maryland and St. John’s.

With Xavier Henry potentially close to committing to Kansas — a Kansas source said it was not a done deal as of Thursday afternoon and Carl Henry said he planned to meet tonight with his sons — Stephenson would have to find another school.

That could open the door for Maryland or St. John’s, or potentially another school, such as Kentucky, which now has John Calipari as its coach.

The source said Stephenson held off on announcing for Kansas on Tuesday because of the uncertainty surrounding the Calipari/Henry situation and of similar uncertainty surrounding the futures of Kansas players Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins. Either or both of them could go pro.

If Collins returns to KU and Henry goes there, “they [the Stephenson family] don’t know what they’re getting into at Kansas,” the source said.

  • I’m sure you’re quite busy.

If you had to set the percentages, what would give the chances of Kansas, St. John’s and Maryland?

  • It seems like X Henry could see himself playing at Memphis for someone like Avery Johnson. If that happens then Stephenson probably heads to Kansas. If not, and Henry goes to Kansas, Maryland looks pretty strong I think. Gary is definitely the kind of tough, high-level coach Lance’s father wants him to play for. St. Johns is too close to home and doesn’t have a top coach right now.
