Guards Propel Louisville Into Big East Final

NEW YORK – For all the talk of Louisville’s talented forwards Earl Clark, Terrence Williams and Samardo Samuels, it was their guards who willed the Cardinals into the Big East Championship game.

Jerry Smith and Andre McGee combined for five second-half 3-pointers and 19 points after the break to help the top-seeded Cardinals overcome an eight-point halftime deficit en route to beating No. 4 Villanova 69-55 in the Big East semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

“In the past couple years with this group we haven’t had a lot of success in the Garden,” said Smith, who hit two clutch 3-pointers during a 17-2 game-changing run to open the second half. “For us to get to the Big East Championship in the Garden, it’s saying a lot for us.”
