St. John's Falls Short Against No. 9 Duke; Red Storm AD Endorses Roberts

NEW YORK — St. John’s extended its losing streak Thursday night by falling to No. 9 Duke at Madison Square Garden, but the school’s athletic director said he still expects Norm Roberts to remain the team’s head coach for the “long term.”

Duke’s 76-69 victory over the Johnnies on ESPN means that St. John’s (12-14, 3-11 Big East) has now lost five straight, six of seven and 10 of 12.

“You look at all your coaches at the end of every year, and I don’t mean that to sound cryptic and non-supportive,” Chris Monasch said before the game. “We expect Norm to be our coach for the long term.”

GONZALEZ IN THE HOUSE

Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez and his wife Tracy were in the house at the Garden tonight to do an interview for an MSG program shown live at 6:30.

Seton Hall (14-11, 5-8 Big East), which lost at Marquette on Tuesday night, will visit St. John’s Sunday in a critical Big East rivalry game for both clubs.

Latest comments

  • It seems like every other week Norm Roberts is being endorsed by the SJU administration.

  • Thanks for touching on two topics of great importance to the die-hard St. John’s fans, the administration’s actions have definitely put the emphasis on “die-hard.”

    1) Speaking directly with Chris Monasch about the current job status of Norm Roberts. For those of us that don’t view Norm Roberts as any sort of savior, it was disappointing to hear we’ll be stuck with mediocrity for the foreseeable future.

The only thing currently offering the remaining St. John’s fans is the prospect of Lance Stephenson joining the program for a year/season.

    2) Addressing both sides on that January NY Post claim that the St. John’s/Duke series would end. It frankly gave some optimism that the sides may be able to get something worked out, even if it’s simply a matter of rescheduling to an earlier time of year.
