NEWARK – On a day when Seton Hall honored the most successful team in school history, the Pirates recaptured a little bit of the old magic.
Seton Hall earned its first Big East win of the season by shocking No. 12 Georgetown 65-60 in front of 9,800 fans at The Prudential Center who came to honor former coach P.J. Carlesimo’s 1989 team that reached the NCAA championship game before falling to Michigan in overtime.
“You gotta get magic in a bottle,” Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez said. “Our kids believed it. They wanted it. They were desperate. The crowd was huge.

MITCHELL, HORNE HONORED
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seton Hall junior transfer Robert Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named to the BIG EAST Conference Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll on Monday.
Mitchell averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in a week that saw the Pirates go 1-1. Seton Hall lost a heart-breaking overtime game, 98-93, to Providence on Thursday, but rebounded to upset #12-ranked Georgetown on Sunday, 65-60, to earn their first BIG EAST victory of the season. In both games, Mitchell scored 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds. In the Pirates’ upset victory over Georgetown, he was 8-for-12 from the field and played all 40 minutes.
This is Mitchell’s first honoring by the BIG EAST. Earlier this season, teammate Jeremy Hazell was an Honor Roll member. Hazell also earned BIG EAST Player of the Week recognition on Nov. 24.
Also earning weekly honors, Pittsburgh’s Sam Young was named BIG EAST Player of the Week, while USF’s Augustus Gilchrist was named Rookie of the Week. Those joining Mitchell on the Weekly Honor Roll include: Jeff Adrien of Connecticut, Terrence Williams of Louisville, Paris Horne of St. John’s and Da’Sean Butler of West Virginia.
Mitchell and the rest of the Pirates will return to action on Thursday, January 29 when they host in-state rival Rutgers at Prudential Center. Game time is scheduled for 9:00 p.m.

2 Questions for you:
1. Do you think the Big East teams may potentially fare much worse than anticipated in the NCAA tournament? I could see this brutal season, in addition to an expanded Big East Tournament, wearing out even the deepest of teams. While I am a Seton Hall fan first, I always cheer for the conference in the tournament.
2. Mike Davis picked up 5 fouls in 2 minutes of play. Is this a record?
I cannot see both Mike Davis & Brandon Walters back next year. At least one will transfer.

The winner of the Big East tournament will have 4 full days to rest before the NCAAs.. Depending on how far a team goes, they could have 5 or 6 days to rest, so I don’t see it being a problem. I think a season in the Big East prepares you for the wars of the postseason.
As for the big guys, it certainly wouldn’t shock me if at least one of them opted to transfer, especially if the Pirates get Jarrid FAmous or another big. That person, plus Pope and possibly Melvyn would presumably get a lot of minutes up front.
