Pittsburgh remained No.1 in the both the AP and USA Today/ESPN college basketball coaches’ polls released Monday.
One of three remaining undefeated teams in Division I, Pittsburgh (15-0) reached the top ranking for the first time in school history seven days ago.
Following an eight-day layoff, the Panthers maintained the No. 1 spot after crushing St. John’s, 90-67, on Sunday afternoon.
“(Being ranked first) is certainly a wonderful accomplishment,” Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon said after the game. “But you don’t want things like that to distract you from the ultimate goal.”
Undefeated Wake Forest (14-0) received two first-place votes in each poll.
Former No. 1 North Carolina, which has lost two of three, dropped to No. 5 in the AP poll and No. 6 in the coaches’ poll.
One week after nine Big East teams were ranked in both polls, West Virginia dropped out, leaving eight teams remaining in both.
