High Schools, Lance Stephenson, St. John's

On Thursday nights I usually like to settle into “The Office” and “30 Rock” on NBC before watching “It’s Only Sunny in Philadelphia” on FX. For my money these are 3 of the best and funniest shows on TV. If you haven’t seen “Sunny,” you better ask somebody….

But tonight I’ll also be watching ESPN beginning at 9:30 because Lance “Born Ready” Stephenson will be on The Worldwide Leader taking on Duncanville, Texas from Dallas. That’s not the deuce or ESPNU, that’s regular old ESPN. Lincoln will appear at least two other times on the ESPN family of networks, and maybe more.

“It tells us we’re finally getting recognized,” Lincoln coach Dwayne “Tiny” Morton told FiveBoroSports.com.

Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — A Syracuse University judicial hearing board has ruled that starting guard Eric Devendorf violated the Student Code of Conduct after allegedly hitting a female student in the face.

The board recommended that Devendorf, a 6-foot-4 junior, be suspended for the remainder of the academic year. He is expected to appeal the decision.

Richard Kesnig, a lawyer who represents the female student, said the university faxed him the decision late Wednesday afternoon.

Devendorf, 21, is the third-leading scorer for the No. 16 Orange, averaging 14.1 points and 3.1 assists. He missed most of last season with a torn knee ligament.

Marquette, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall

CHERRY HILL, N.J. — I drove down here today to check in with Chris Chaney’s Patterson School team, arguably the top prep program in the nation right now. Patterson improved to 19-0 by blowing out one of Apex Academy’s four teams, 108-63, in a game that featured 16 first-half dunks by a Patterson team that has Rice-bound Arsalan Kazemi, Marshall commit Hassan Whiteside, Georgia State commit Rashanti Harris and Washington-bound Clarence Trent.

Numerous Division I coaches were on hand, including La Salle head coach Dr. John Giannini, Scott Adubato and Derm Player of Seton Hall, Craig Carter of Rutgers, Chris Chaney of St. John’s and coaches from St. Peter’s, Florida Atlantic and Southern Illinois.

One of the featured uncommitted players on Patterson is DeAndre “Big Daddy” Kane, a 6-4 wing from Pittsburgh who is being courted by Pittsburgh, Seton Hall and Marquette.

He is a very athletic wing player who moved quickly and easily up the court and had no problem scoring near the basket. On one play he went coast-to-coast, grabbing a defensive rebound, dribbling the length and laying it in. He also hit a 3-pointer to show some range.

Rutgers, Rutgers Football

PRINCETON, N.J. — Every scandal needs a scapegoat and Bob Mulcahy appears to be the scapegoat for the scandal surrounding the finances within the Rutgers athletic department.

Mulcahy, 72, will step down as the school’s athletic director at the end of the month, following the football team’s appearance in the PapaJohns.com Bowl Dec. 29 in Birmingham, Ala.

After 10 years on the job, Mulcahy may be on his way out, but he’s not going quietly.

“I was asked to resign,” he said in a statement released Wednesday night by the University. “I have not offered my resignation.”

Dominic Cheek, Kansas, Rutgers, Villanova

Dominic Cheek will choose between Kansas and Villanova and will announce his decision Friday at a 6 o’clock press conference at the Golden Door Charter School in Jersey City, according to a report in the Jersey Journal.

“For six months I thought it was going to be Villanova or Kansas and I don’t think anything has changed,” St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley said Wednesday by phone. “The decision is being made by this kid.”

The 6-foot-5 Cheek, the No. 6 shooting guard in the Class of 2009, had initially included Memphis, Pittsburgh and Rutgers on his list but has apparently cut them.

Hurley said he plans to run a two-hour practice beginning at 3:30 on Friday and no announcement will be made until it’s over, probably around 6.
