Playing with just seven scholarship players, Seton Hall stunned No. 19 USC, 63-61, Thursday in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Jeremy Hazell paced Seton Hall with 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting, Eugene Harvey added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and John Garcia tallied 11 and a game-high 18 rebounds.

Harvey made a free throw with five seconds remaining and USC’s Daniel Hackett missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to seal the win for Seton Hall.

“Our kids showed so much heart, courage and determination,” Seton Hall head coach Bobby Gonzalez told WABC 770-AM.

This will be a big weekend for the Rutgers men’s basketball team and not just because the Scarlet Knights (2-0) are hosting two games in the Garden State Challenge.

St. Anthony senior wing Dominic Cheek will take his official visit to campus from Friday through Sunday and will watch both games, according to St. Anthony associate head coach Ben Gamble.

“Yes, Friday to Sunday,” Gamble said in a text message.

Pittsburgh, Providence, Seton Hall, Tennessee

Providence continued to land quality players when it secured a commitment Wednesday from 5-foot-10, 160-pound point guard Johnnie Lacy of Notre Dame Prep.

Lacy, the No. 18 point guard in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals, chose the Friars over Tennessee, Texas and Pitt, Notre Dame coach Ryan Hurd said.

“We’re excited about his future at Providence,” Hurd said by phone. “We think there’s an opportunity for him to have a great career there. He chose Providence because of his level of comfort with Keno [Davis]. That made it an obvious decision for him.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Nike will once again invite some of the nation’s best high school basketball teams to New York City’s premier high school basketball event – the Nike Super 6 Showdown. The event serves as a pinnacle moment in the New York City hoops scene showcasing top, up and coming talent from five New York City area teams as well as one Minnesota team.

The Nike Super 6 Showdown will take place Friday, February 13, 2009 at Fordham University’s Bronx campus in the Rose Hill Gym. The 2009 games include 5 of the top 30 ranked high school basketball teams, according to the ESPN Rise Boys Basketball Pre Season Poll: 15th ranked Rice High School (NYC), 28th ranked Paterson Catholic High School (NJ), 3rd ranked St. Patrick’s High School (NJ), 8th ranked Abraham Lincoln High School (Brooklyn, NY), Thomas Jefferson Campus High School (Brooklyn, NY) and 25th ranked Hopkins High School (Minnetonka, MN).
