Mason, Lance & St. John’s Recruiting

With Anthony Mason Jr. sidelined for the year with a foot injury, expect the 6-foot-7, 210-pound senior to seek a medical redshirt that would allow him to play in the 2009-10 season.

The issue is this. After getting NLIs from Omari Lawrence and Dwight Hardy, St. John’s has just one scholarship remaining for next season, a scholarship they were saving for another recruit….possibly Lance Stephenson.

The 6-5 Stephenson out of Brooklyn Lincoln — No. 3 in the USA Today Super 25 Preseason rankings — won’t commit until the spring and is considering St. John’s, Kansas, Memphis, USC and UCLA. Some say he may end up in Europe as well.

If the Johnnies are to find room for Lance — even if it is for just one year before he goes pro — they would need to open up room on the roster via a transfer or another departure.

Stay tuned….
