The landscape of Dominic Cheek’s recruitment is undergoing some changes.
The 6-foot-5 Cheek has shuffled some visit dates and knocked some schools off his list.
First, both Indiana and Seton Hall are out, according to St. Anthony associate head coach Ben Gamble, who is handling Cheek’s recruitment.
“He’s no longer interested in Indiana and he’s no longer interested in Seton Hall,” Gamble said Thursday afternoon by phone. “He just wasn’t comfortable with those situations.”
That leaves Kansas, Villanova, Pittsburgh, Memphis and Rutgers.
Cheek has already taken official visits to Kansas and Villanova, and was slated to go to Pitt this weekend. Yet Gamble said the Pitt visit has been moved to Nov. 7 and the Memphis visit will remain on the weekend of Nov. 14.
The other news is that Cheek may take his fifth official visit to Rutgers on an undetermined date.
“There’s a strong chance that Rutgers will have an official visit,” Gamble said. “Nothing has been confirmed yet but he will go to the exhibition game on Nov. 10 against Caldwell College.”
Cheek has former St. Anthony teammates at Kansas (Tyshawn Taylor), PItt (Travon Woodall) and Rutgers (Mike Rosario), so he would have a friendly face at any of those three.
Rutgers has two commitments for 2009 in Dane Miller of Rush Henrietta High and Austin Johnson of Blair Academy. If the Knights were able to add Cheek to that class and to a young group that already includes Rosario, freshman big man Greg Echenique of St. Benedict’s and sophomore guard Corey Chandler, it could provide tremendous momentum going forward.
Asked last weekend what kind of player he will be at the next level, Cheek said:
“I know I can come in and be a team player, get everybody involved and everything. Do the little things like rebound, pass and make open shots.”
As to when he’ll decide, Cheek said, “Right now, I’m not sure.”
