Former Rutgers All-Big East left tackle Pedro Sosa has signed with the Miami Dolphins.
Sosa, a 2007 Second Team All-Big East selection, served as a starter on Rutgers’ offensive line each of the last three seasons. He was part of a unit that led the nation in fewest sacks allowed (eight) in 2006 and was tied for the second-lowest sacks surrendered last fall. Over his final two seasons with the Scarlet Knights, Sosa allowed just one sack. He did not allow a sack over the final 25 games of his collegiate career.
He served on a line that paved the way for a 2,000-yard rusher in Ray Rice and an offense that established new school records in scoring (426), first downs (294) and total offense (5,841) last season.
He joins a growing list of Scarlet Knights currently playing in the NFL, including six from last season’s squad.
The Dolphins also signed former Rutgers standout defensive back Nate Jones during the offseason. Sosa’s former bookend tackle mate from last season, Jeremy Zuttah, was selected by Tampa Bay in the third round in April’s draft.
Headlining the group of Scarlet Knights in the NFL are team captains and Super Bowl Champions, Shaun O’Hara of the New York Giants and Gary Brackett of the Indianapolis Colts.
Rice was a two-time All-American running back for RU who was selected in the second round of last season’s draft by the Baltimore Ravens, while 2006 graduate and two-time All-American full back Brian Leonard was a second-round pick of the St. Louis Rams the year before.
Fellow former classmates Ron Girault and Brandon Renkart signed free-agent contracts with the New Your Jets, while Eric Foster singed a free-agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts.
In all, 17 former Scarlet Knights are currently on NFL rosters. Of the 17 players, 16 were coach by Greg Schiano at Rutgers.
