Momo Jones Won’t Attend St. Anthony

St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley says Lamont “Momo” Jones won’t be coming to the Jersey City school after all.

“School policy has been not to take seniors, so in talking to the principal they just felt that that was a good policy to maintain,” Hurley said by phone Wednesday afternoon. “I didn’t really have any strong feelings about it one way or another. I only met the young man once. I don’t think we want to change policy.”

Hurley said he was uncertain where the 6-foot Jones, a Manhattan native who once played at Rice, would end up, but rumors have circulated that he may follow Tony Bergeron to Blair Christian (Pa.). Jones did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

“Wherever Coach Bergeron ends up, or where I feel comfortable, that’s where I’ll end up,” Jones told me in June.

Jones played last year alongside Tyreke Evans for Bergeron at American Christian in Aston, Pa., and Bergeron was reported to have taken a job at Longmeadow High in Mass. to be near his father, but now it appears he may be headed to Blair.

For a brief instant, it appeared that Jones would come to St. Anthony and team up with Dominic Cheek in the backcourt, but now that won’t happen.

“We had a lot of phone calls about it,” Hurley said. “There really wasn’t any connection. When it came down to it, they don’t allow seniors and we will continue with the same policy.”

Jones recently visited Seton Hall for a couple of hours and is reportedly also considering Xavier, Oklahoma State and Texas.

“It was a good visit (to Seton Hall),” he said. “Right now, I’m not really thinking about college. Just focusing on high school. Finishing up my senior year. I’m pretty open to anybody right now. (I have) no preliminary list right now.”
