Parrom Has Top Five

Kevin Parrom has trimmed his list to five schools — and two of them are local.

“I narrowed it down a little bit,” the 6-foot-6, 200-pound Parrom said Tuesday night by phone. “Right now it’s Xavier, St. John’s, South Carolina, Marquette and Rutgers. I don’t have a favorite.”

Parrom, the No. 18 small forward in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals, said he hopes to make a decision before his senior season at South Kent (Conn.). He and former St. Raymond’s of the Bronx teammate Omari Lawrence both transferred to the Connecticut prep school during the offseason, and are part of a mass exodus from the New York Catholic League to various prep schools and New Jersey parochial powerhouses that also includes Devon Collier and Ashton Pankey (to St. Anthony) and Doron Lamb (to Oak Hill).

“I’m hoping I decide before my first official game at South Kent,” Parrom said.

Next on Parrom’s agenda is an unofficial to St. John’s.

“I’m taking an unofficial visit to St. John’s Aug. 11,” he said. “I’ve been there before for tournaments and practices, so I’m looking forward to that.”

Lawrence previously told ZAGSBLOG that St. John’s was his top choice, raising the possibility that the teammates could both end up playing for Norm Roberts.

“We haven’t really talked it about yet, but if it’s’ a good fit I might go there,” Parrom said.

As for Rutgers, Parrom has already taken an unofficial to campus.

“It was nice, it was a good visit,” he said. “I know the campus well enough.”

Parrom and Lawrence both took an unofficial to Marquette in June, but he still has yet to visit South Carolina.

“South Carolina I gotta take a visit before October,” he said. “I don’t know much about South Carolina but I’m going to try and get to know it pretty well.”

Xavier has recruited Parrom very hard and Xavier assistant Book Richardson knows both Parrom and Lawrence from his time with the New York Gauchos.

“Book is a good guy and Coach (Sean) Miller is a good guy, too,” Parrom said. “It’s not just one person, but the whole staff has to be important.”

Parrom plans to be at South Kent by Sept. 7
