Lance, Witherspoon Cut from U18 Team

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Bob McKillop and his staff made their final two cuts from the USA U18 team after a scrimmage Monday night and the last two players to go were Brooklyn’s Lance Stephenson and Memphis commit Wesley Witherspoon.

Although Stephenson may have been the most talented player among the 18 invited to try out, McKillop had had concerns about his attitude toward his teammates throughout the tryouts. Read my story here from last week.

“What I’m really happy about is how hard he competes,” the coach told me. “Usually someone that has been given that amount of attention he has had, they don’t have that sense of accountability in terms of competitiveness, and he really competes. He gets discouraged when a play doesn’t go the right way, either by himself or by a teammate. And he needs to transcend the play and go on to the next play.”
